There is nothing "Essential" about this cookbook. It is just yet-another collection of America's Test Kitchen's "more modern" recipes. I had hoped it really would be an "Essential" reference cookbook, but it is not, rather it is just another collection of ATK recipes. Much more compelling, for example, in my opinion, is ATK's recent recipe book "Sous Vide for Everybody" -- if you are into Sous Vide. If you want an "Essential" cookbook, by comparison, I would recommend Mark Bittman's Classic "How to Cook Everything."

This is a great cookbook for the adventurous beginner, or someone who just wants the basics in one place. What I particularly like about ATK recipes is the thought and care that goes into testing them. Who can always tweak them to taste ( recommend making each at least one time if you’re not a “seasoned” cook). I also like the tips, and ‘think like a chef’ sections for added commentary. The recipes are a nice selection that almost anyone would want in their repertoire and almost ingredients can be found at a reasonably sized market in the US. This would make a nice gift for a bride or groom to be, those just starting out with an interest in cooking for themselves and friends, a House warming gift, etc. it probably should have been updated/ new Essential Cookbook, as it doesn’t contain everything thing, every recipe, etc., but what most want or need most now.

This is a great little cookbook for cooks of all experience and ability. It contains a wide variety of recipes that are not too complicated and most do not contain obscure ingredients. The best part are the "basics" included along the way: everything from proper vegetable prep, to basic homemade broth, to frosting a layer cake, or perfecting hard cooked eggs. Along the way are great tips and recommendations from America's Test Kitchen. I cannot forget to mention: PHOTOS! Beautiful photos of not only the finished recipe, but, more importantly, key steps along the way. This is my third cookbook from ATK. While some of the recipes/techniques are in my other books, this one is arranged so nicely and has nice color photos.

Everything I’ve tried from this book has been excellent. I would especially recommend this for anyone who is new to America’s Test Kitchen. It’s a good introduction book with a wide range of recipes. But, even thought this is my fourth ATK book, there’s new and good recipes that I’ve really enjoyed. The overnight yeasted waffles are excellent, as is the bucatini with breadcrumbs, peas and pancetta.

This is a book everyone needs to have in their kitchen. Every page contains so much helpful information on technique, ingredients, variations and so much more. The recipes are great too. Bought two additional copies for my friends - and they are now fans!

Love it! Easy to use, excellent information, and wonderful recipes. Just knocked my other traditional cookbooks off the shelf.

Highly recommend this for all levels of cooking. I’m a pretty decent cook, but this helped me add some new recipes and techniques to my daily cooking routines.

Easy to read. Very informative on positive reinforcement training . Doesn't sugar coat what these dogs are bred and used for. But also shows how they can be integrated into families and other professions. I respect and admire his dedication to making sure the dogs are well placed throughout their entire lives.

This book is a good read if you want the history of dog's in war or DOW's ( Dogs of war). In the beginning, he goes over briefly of certain training techniques and what they look for in a puppy ( who makes the cut to becoming a SEAL team member). Obviously, they can't tell you everything about how they train the dogs because that would give too much information away. But it reads kinda like an autobiography at times, with personal stories of Mike's childhood to his war stories as a SEAL team member overseas. Really good read and great information!

This is by far the best of several books I've read about military working dogs. It's the most realistic, gritty and detailed portrayal of these dogs, their abilities and their missions you can find without actually working with the dogs themselves. I've read other books by reporters and observers, but this book is written by an insider - a former SEAL and MWD handler, now a contractor who buys and trains these dogs for the military and law-enforcement. The author has the most in-depth understanding of these dogs I've encountered, and he communicates in a very readable and engaging way. His love and admiration for these dogs is palpable. You will not find more personal accounts or stories of greater heroics anywhere else. I came away with a whole new appreciation for these dogs and their handlers. These are teams who deserve the gratitude of all Americans - military teams who operate at a higher level that is just unfathomable even to those of us well-versed in the canine world. This book is a great read. I highly recommend it.

It is amazing to me the depth of writing from our modern warriors, and Mike Ritland shows an open soul as he distinctly describes his personal love of dogs and the molding of them as partners for our warriors.The prologue give you chills as to the depth of our relationship with Man's Best Friend in conflict and set's us up for quite a ride as the introduction sets the stage with a prime example of an elite team in the darkness of night, festooned with the best gear in history, totally trusting the senses of Ruco as danger sets in - and Ruco piles into mortal danger completely for his humans...with seeming little regard for his onwn safety.How do such beasts come to be with our elite wariors? The author goes into great depth as he describes training techniques and regimens of positive reinforcement to build upon the long bred spirit of the amazing dogs he choses to train for the most dangerous of all missions. We see the journey of coordinated play with spirited pups through gradual increase of play and reward - all geared towards trust between canine and handler to sacrifice for each other.I truly enjoyed the depth of description on training from explosives detection to bite work in the suits up through the physical training and toll the chosen life takes on these elite animals.All through the book we see examples of the canines with their handlers in conflict with emphasis on how effective they truly are. The histories intersperse with stories from Mr. Ritland as he speaks with loving undertones of the dogs he trains, and those that are just his companions now. All through we see how much they mean to him - and we the reader are rewarded with a great story....Cairo, Castor, Sampson and many more great dogs come to us.Get this work - it is a must for any history buff of modern warfare - with a true link to ancient times.

An absorbing if overlong sequel to Carr's popular 1994 thriller, The Alienist. As in that novel, the figures of ``alienist'' (i.e., psychologist) Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, investigative journalist John Schuyler Moore, and Kreizler's assistant Stevie ``Stevepipe'' Taggert (who tells the story) figure prominently in the investigation of a peculiarly dastardly crime. The year is 1897, and Carr's plot is initiated by the kidnapping of a Spanish diplomat's baby--then thickens, quite pleasurably, as suspicion falls on Elspeth Hunter, a malevolent nurse who is actually Libby Hatch, a malevolent gang moll and the suspected murderess of her own children. The pursuit, capture, and attempted conviction of Libby involve such notable historical figures as painter Albert Pinkham Ryder, women's-rights crusader Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Libby's defense attorney Clarence Darrow (who dominates a fascinating extended courtroom scene), and (back also from The Alienist) New York City Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt, who commandeers the US Navy to aid in the story's climactic pursuit. Carr overloads his tale with digressive comments on ever-worsening political relations between the US and Cuba (though one can argue such passages' relevance to the novel's initial mystery), and disastrously slows down the otherwise absorbing courtroom scenes by including needless detailed summaries of cases of child murder offered as precedents. But these are minor blemishes. Carr has learned to plot since The Alienist, and this novel usually moves at a satisfyingly rapid pace. The ambiance is convincingly thick and period-flavorful, the murderous details satisfyingly gruesome, and even the somewhat shaky central ethical question--whether ``a woman's murdering her own kids . . . could actually be looked at as her trying to gain control over her life and her world''--is quite convincingly presented. As for the nefarious Libby--presented, with perfect appropriateness, only as others see and hear her--she rivals Lydia Gwilt of Wilkie Collins's Armadale as the pluperfect villainess, and the centerpiece of an enormously entertaining and satisfying reading experience. Great continuation of some of the characters from the Alienist but a stand alone story. I always tell people you can pick up "Angel of Darkness" without the background history from the Alienist. Love the suspenseful writing style and steady pace, very hard to put the book down. As always love the details and descriptions the author,is so great at and makes the reader feel as a part of the environment. Love the psychological aspects of the story and how modern criminologist had there start in the field.

I knew from the first “Alienist” book that the story could slow down with all the historical anecdotal details and facts but I liked it enough to go forward and read on. It didn’t disappoint. This book is told from a different perspective, one of Dr. Kreizler’s the so called Alienist of the book, employees. The first book was a story told by a newspaper journalist who was a close friend of Dr. Kreizler. So the books each had a different personality while maintaining the same frame of reference, pacing, mystery and suspense. The historical detail was less burdensome in this story perhaps because of the supposed youth and therefore I would assume less interest on the behalf of the storyteller on many of the broader political schemes and intrigues of the time. Yet there was enough local historical detail relevant to a young street urchin to make it clear that there was a tremendous amount of research and accurate historical background included in the story to make it just a little more interesting.

I didn't realize the length of this book, but decided to read it since it was book 2 of Caleb Carr's story regarding Dr. Lazlo Kreizler, the Alienist. I found it interesting that it was written in the first person, but by one of the characters in the first book, which gave a totally different perspective on how he viewed all the other characters and how close he had become to the good Doctor. Although it was an easy read and an extremely interesting story, what I found distracting were all the typographical errors throughout the book. This shouldn't be. When I saw the first one, I thought, okay, this is a very long story, so someone missed this typo. But as the story progressed, there were more and more. Each time I came across one, my flow of reading stopped and I found it to be a distraction. Maybe the next print run this can be corrected.All in all, the story was interesting, the main characters from the first book were still a "team" and familiar names were introduced which almost made this believable.

In my recent nostalgic look back at books I’ve read and enjoyed from a few decades ago after re-reading Caleb Carr’s “The Alienist” decided to also read his sequel to that story, “The Angel of Darkness”. In it Carr reunites his team of memorable characters from “The Alienist”; Dr. Laszlo Kreizler a psychiatrist (or “alienist” in turn of the last century parlance), newspaperman John Schulyer Moore, former NYPD secretary, pistol-packing Sara Howard, and Kreisler’s ward former street ruffian Stevie “The Stevepipe” Taggart, ably assisted by NYPD detective brothers Marcus and Lucius Isaacson . Set in old time New York City Mr. Carr captures the period nicely and the setting is as much of a character as any of the people we encounter. Told from Stevie’s perspective as if told in a memoir we find Kreizler in a bit of a funk since a child under his care at his institute committed suicide and he’s under investigation. Banned from his workplace until things are sorted out the good doctor needs a diversion and a child abduction from the family of a Spanish diplomat serves the purpose. Matters become complicated quickly and soon our investigators find themselves on the trail of a sinister woman serial killer of small children (including her own). Carr is an excellent writer but unfortunately this novel moves at a glacial pace and the level of suspense never approaches what readers experienced in “The Alienist”. The plot slows down even more so when the team takes a road trip to upstate New York to Ballston Spa and Saratoga to investigate the background of their suspected murderess, Libby Hatch (AKA Elspeth Hunter among others). Things move very slowly at this point until eventually Kreizler & Co. assemble enough evidence (some of it unethically manufactured) to see Hatch arrested and put on trial for the murder of her two young sons years earlier. There’s a fairly long, boring trial that’s only enlivened by the appearance of none other than famous defense attorney Clarence Darrow and his court room theatrics. Things proceed badly for the good guys but when some last minute evidence promises to put our killer behind bars she stages a daring and deadly escape. The pace then picks up as our heroes relentless track Hatch down ending with a climactic rooftop confrontation (just like in “The Alienist”) and justice is finally served. The reappearance of Kreizler’s of friend former NYPD Police Commissioner turned Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Theodore Roosevelt is a welcome event but I wish Carr contrived to bring TR on board sooner than later. It took me some time to get through “The Angel of Darkness” and I remember that it was a bit of a slog when I read it back in the 90’s too. These are solid characters placed in a fascinating historical period and despite the pacing problems in this book it’s surprising that Mr. Carr chose not to bring them back for a third adventure. Perhaps the recent adaptation of “The Alienist” by TNT into a series might motivate him to do just that.

Loved the voice of the narrator, though often had to suspend belief about the narrator’s comprehension of some advanced aspects of medicine and psychology, given his background and lack of formal education. The story took some major twists and turns, from likely kidnapping to following the trail of a female serial killer. But, wow. After many many pages of theorizing on her motivations, and level of sanity, the climax of the story (“proving” her motivations) was sorely lacking. It didn’t quite fit. And, how ridiculous the “deux ex machina” device that was employed. Also, Dragging in notable names of the era to bulk up the story (Clarence Darrow, Teddy Roosevelt, Elizabeth Cady Stanton) seemed forced.*small spoiler**After having read the previous book, The Alienist, I remember feeling a bit surprised at the neat package created for the reader at the conclusion. Now, I’m beyond surprised. I feel there should have been a better motivation for the criminal, or certainly, a more believeable one than (the pressures of society, etc) was offered.

I write this review on a Sunday when the New York Times has just published a long article quoting a claim by one of our sitting Supreme Court Justices that the Roberts court has “weaponized” free speech. If in fact the court is tilting against liberal petitioners for their free speech rights and in favor of conservatives, that is a deeply troubling development. The US has the most permissive speech rights of any country in the world, indeed in the history of the world, guaranteed by the First Amendment. These rights depend on the trust of citizens that enforcement of freedom of speech will be viewpoint neutral, and not a scrim for advancing a political position, whether on the right or the left.Just think. A sitting justice speaks out in the paper of record against the principle of free speech. This situation amounts to an emergency. We are at a point in our democracy where an increasing number of citizens seem ready to give up on the ideal “free speech,” because to them it looks like simply another piece on the chess board that the group-in-power can use to win the political game.These people need to read Nadine Strossen’s “Hate: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship.” This thorough and cogently written book reveals, in meticulous historical detail, the important resource that freedom of speech has offered to vulnerable groups—ethnic and racial minorities, war protesters, international human rights advocates—who have successfully through history advanced their cause under the protection of the viewpoint neutrality promised by the First Amendment.As Strossen’s balanced but passionate analysis demonstrates, if there is anything that can be “weaponized” (a word that I think is itself being “weaponized”), it is restraint of speech. The groups in power have consistently used “hate speech” regulations against the very people that such rules were intended to protect. This point has been well documented in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. But it is still relevant. Read in Strossen’s book about the unequal enforcement of the University of Michigan’s hate speech code against African Americans in the late 1980s (88-89) or about the experience of a black mother who posted racial epithets directed at her young sons on Facebook only to see her objection to “hate speech” taken down because its content could not be distinguished electronically from the real thing. Restraints on speech cannot themselves be restrained.A better response, as Strossen argues persuasively, is to do as she does: argue back. She provides the evidence that the psychological harms of even noxious speech are over-rated, especially when their targets are encouraged to resist speech with more speech. As she concludes, exercise your right “not to be silent” (182).The American tradition of free speech is, like all human institutions, imperfect. The only thing worse would be to lose it.

This book is incredible and important, perhaps more than ever. Not only does Strossen lay out the most common and powerful arguments in favor of having hate speech laws, but she also answers them in a way that is compelling, nuanced, and informed. At the end of the day, it serves as an excellent reminder of why we need the First Amendment and to continue to defend it

This beautifully written and thoughtful explanation of why “hate speech” laws harm freedom should be a must read for school administrators, lawmakers, and the President of the United States. It makes clear why laws against offensive ideas and actions, like burning or desecrating the flag of the U.S. are harmful in the long run. Unless the expression causes immediate physical harm, like yelling “fire” in a crowded theater when there is no fire, the speech should be protected as free expression, even if offensive to almost all thinking members of our society. We need to learn from Germany and France who have found that enforcing their “hate speech” laws leads to more, not less, hate.

This is a short, concise and terrifically well-researched book on the value of hate speech laws. The upshot – there’s little if any value and a good deal of adverse effects from such laws. The author is a current professor of Constitutional Law and a long term president of the ACLU. Before reading, I figured I was in for a left-wing polemic on various social justice topics of the day but I was wrong. The book’s arguments are given in a neutral voice with the author using fact after fact rather than unsubstantiated opinion. Sure, some of the examples of evil are from a left side view but the book’s conclusions are presented lacking any bias whatsoever.The book is presented with a good deal of legal opinions as well as many interesting anecdotes illustrating the point the author is making. A good deal of argument is dedicated to these laws being counter-productive. Rather than fulfilling their promise, they can blow back on the groups which are supposed to be protected by them. They’re misused. For example, Merkel used and continues to use anti-hate speech laws to suppress those who disagree with her politics. This has been the case many times in the past as well.In a rather extreme example, but one which should put a finale on passing such laws, the author illustrates how laws supposedly preventing Nazi speech led to the Nazis assuming power in Germany, 1933. This isn’t an isolated example of counter productivity either. The author’s found more.Still, the biggest issue with hate speech laws is hate speech defies definition – at least legally. Sure, we all know it when we hear it but trying to define when something is hateful in a law doesn’t seem possible. Time and time again such laws, due to their vagueness, hurt those supposedly helped or rope in true innocents who find themselves victims of unintended consequences. If they ever work, they only do so after long drawn out trials where the publicity gains the hate speaker more attention than he could have gotten on his own.In a very interesting chapter and for a bit more as the book went on, the author examines the adverse effect of hate speech. Is it like violent video games where most think they foment violence in children but none have demonstrated it? Most telling along this line, the author delves into if it’s better to be shielded from discomforting ideas or exposed to them. Finally, the author offers a few ideas on how, aside from laws, hate speech can be countered.I found the book fascinating as it taught me a good deal. To say I’ve changed a few opinions is to put it mildly. The book may be aimed at those in power who can pass or repeal such laws, but I think anybody with even a passing interest in this topic will enjoy as much as I did. I most heartily wish it be made mandatory reading for every college official on today’s campuses where dress codes are passé but speech codes run rampant.

Cory and Harlan are two names in the digital forensics community that you can always trust to bring you great material. This book is packed full of resources for a wide variety of uses. What I love most about the book is that pros are able to learn new methods and tools from it while students are able to easily pick up the book and get started. This is one of those books that I truly feel is perfectly tied to a quote made famous by Isaac Newton "If I have seen further it is by standing on (the) shoulders of Giants." Everyone can easily learn an enormous amount from these two authors and their career long adventures and experiences with digital forensics.I teach digital forensic classes at the grad school level and also at a non-profit; in both classes to students of a wide range of skills I always recommend this book as a must read. It has something for everyone.

As Cory and Harlan state in the introduction, this book is intended for two audiences; new forensic practitioners and experienced digital forensics practitioners new to open source tools. I believe they have succeeded in providing top-notch material for both audiences. Several excellent five star reviews have already been posted, which I agree with wholeheartedly. In order to avoid simply rehashing these existing reviews, I would like to simply state that I believe Cory and Harlan did two things very well with DFWOST:1. As Cory and Harlan state in the introduction to Chapter 2, "Being able to build software properly is critical for an examiner using open source tools". Speaking as a seasoned examiner that consistently leverages the majority of the tools in DFWOST, we sometimes forget that the configuration of various interpreters (Perl, Python, Ruby) and the proper installation of tools from source are a difficult task for those new to open source tools. This technical hurdle often inhibits the adoption of open source utilities by even senior analysts. I believe Cory and Harlan had this hurdle in mind when authoring DFWOST, as they provide their readers with valuable information regarding these tasks. Chapter 2 does an excellent job of stepping the reader through the installation of various interpreters and utilities for both the Linux and Windows environments. Before I read DFWOST, I was curious if Cory and Harlan would leverage an available Linux-based live distro and bypass the topic of installation and configuration of an examination system all together. I was happy to see they they did not take this route, as dependency on a live distro can simply add a layer of abstraction for a new student.2. Instead of bloating DFWOST with content that has been covered in depth in existing publications, Cory and Harlan opt to simply direct readers to these resources. Given both the author's resumes (and previous publications), they could of easily supplied this information in DFWOST to unnecessarily bulk this book up. For instance, when the topic of advanced Windows Registry analysis is mentioned, the reader is directed to Harlan's Windows Registry Forensics. This may be construed as self-serving, but the same is done when the topic of Windows binary (PE) analysis is entered. In this case, the reader is directed towards Malware Analyst's Cookbook by Ligh, Adiar, Hartstein, and Richard. In my opinion, both these publications are the definitive sources for their perspective topics. It is refreshing to see the authors direct their readers to the appropriate place, instead of diving into a topic that probably doesn't have the appropriate real estate dedicated for discussion in the first place.As with any material these two authors provide to the community, DFWOST should be required reading for any examiner - not just open source hobbyists and newbies. I hope we see another great publication from both Cory and Harlan in the near future. They make a good team.

That's a huge book! It explains very well what to collect, why to collect, how to collect E-evidences and then it explains how to work on your findings with open-source tools.A lot of work has been put in that book. You definitely feel the sweat of the author putting all information together, the testing, the results.If you start in Digital Forensics it might be slightly complex but it can easily be your second or third book in that matter.If you're already an IT engineer or passionate and you want to explore the deep technical bit of digital forensics then go for it. It's a treasure of information.Do prefer the paperback version because you will love putting annotation and highlighting some lines to keep them in mind and for further usage. I have the Kindle edition but I consider buying the paperback as well just to keep it under my arm on my desk.

First let me start off by saying that the Amazon packaging was terrible and likely the reason the book looked 'used' instead of new when I received it. In order to get better packaging you might want to order this book with other books.-----The author does not make the assumption that everyone reading the book will be familiar with what Open Source Software is and goes in to a little bit of detail on the subject. As a FOSS advocate I was appreciative of the effort put in to educate others on this subject.Chapter 2:This chapter is about getting your forensic computer setup with FOSS tools and applications. It covers setups on Linux and Windows, but with a preference towards Ubuntu (Linux) as this is what the author used and what the examples are done with.Chapter 3:Covers the basics of how to analyze disks. This includes covering ram slack, file slack, file systems specifics, carving and hashing. It is important to know how to handle evidence if will be needed in a court room. Failure to use hashes and load a disk as read only will likely result in evidence being questioned and potentially thrown out.Chapter 4:Covers Windows specific file systems artifactsChapter 5:Covers Linux specific file systems artifactsChapter 6:Covers OS specific file system artifactsChapter 7:Covers browser artifacts for IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari. It also covers email artifacts. I was particularly interested by the Chrome and Safari artifacts.Chapter 8:Deals with file analysis covering media files, documents and others. It was interesting to note that there does not appear to be any ability for Open Source tools to leverage known hashes to identify files known to law enforcement.Chapter 9:Automating the process -- trust me you do not want to have to do everything by hand.Chapter 10:Covered free, but not open source tools that are available.Overall I found the book to have a solid mix of theory and tool use examples. It also included links to forensic images you can use to experiment with the tools. I already played with many of these images with proprietary tools a while back and look forward to exploring how open source tools work with them as well.Solid book diminished only by the inept packaging Amazon utilized. If the book were not so good I would be returning the book.
