About the Author
Wayne Persky was born, grew up, and currently lives in Central Texas. He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, College of Engineering, with postgraduate studies in mechanical engineering, mathematics, and computer science. He has teaching experience in engineering, and business experience in farming and agribusiness. After the onset of severe digestive system and general health problems in the late 1990s, he went through extensive clinical testing, but the GI specialist failed to take biopsies during a colonoscopy exam, and even failed to test for celiac disease. Afterward, not surprisingly, he was told by his gastroenterologist that there was nothing wrong with him. Unable to find a medical solution, he was forced to use his research skills to discover innovative ways to resolve his health issues. After extensive study, he identified the likely source of the problem as food sensitivities. It took a year and a half of avoiding all traces of gluten, plus trial and error experimentation with other foods, and careful record-keeping, to track down all of the food issues. But once he eliminated all of them from his diet, he got his life back. He currently administrates an online microscopic colitis discussion and support forum, while continuing to research medical issues that are not adequately addressed by mainstream medicine. He is also the founder and president of the Microscopic Colitis Foundation.

This is an incredibly GREAT BOOK!!! My HAT IS OFF to Wayne Persky, who is not a doctor, but an extremely BRIGHT SCIENTIST/ENGINEER who truly thinks OUT-OF-THE-BOX. For anyone suffering from collagenous colitis or similar POORLY- DIAGNOSED conditions, this book is a MUST READ. EVERY DOCTOR AND PHARMACIST SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!!!SO HERE IS MY REASONING: I am a Registered Pharmacist with over 50 years of experience. My wife, who is now age 73, suddenly developed collagenous (microscopic) colitis over 2 years ago. Her doctor did diagnose the condition upon colonoscopy and tissue biopsy. He prescribed budesonide, which did work. However, long term use of steroids to treat anything is fraught with problems. So we tried Boswellia extract, an effective and safe anti-inflammatory, and it worked well for about a few months. So I researched the internet and discovered Wayne Persky's book through the "MICROSCOPIC COLITIS SUPPORT" website. The bottom line is that in Chapter 14 of his book Wayne describes that the problem with this conditions is OVERACTIVE MAST CELLS in the small intestines. These overactive mast cells produce considerable HISTAMINE, which causes inflammation and resultant colitis.THE SOLUTION: This may not work for everyone, but it is worth a try. BUY THE BOOK AND MAKE YOUR OWN DECISIONS!!! Wayne Persky describes the use of over-the-counter antihistamines to treat microscopic colitis. He also states that this is a WIDELY UNDERDIAGNOSED CONDTION. He states that most doctors simply are in the dark about the role of mast cells and colitis. So the bottom line is that I had my wife take one ALLEGRA (fexofenadine) 60 mg tablet (H2 antihistamine) in the morning, and 2 Chlorpheniramine (4mg. each H1 antihistamine) tablets at bedtime. She has experienced no side effects. Within a few days her condition greatly improved, and within a week or so her colitis was GONE, and has stayed this way. Both of these antihistamine are relatively safe. Other antihistamines may also work, but I chose these two because of their relative safety and few side effects. Antihistamines can cause some drowsiness, especially the older H1 type. All folks are unique, so you may or may not have similar EXCELLENT RESULTS. READ THE BOOK!!! CHECK THE WEBSITE!!! MAKE YOUR OWN DECISION(S). What do you have to lose???I am not a doctor, do not prescribe, and do not claim this works for everyone. That is why you must read Wayne's book and make your own decision, and also check with your doctor. Do not expect him or her to be enthusiastic. Why all of this mast cell overactivity and antihistamine information and approach is not widely published and known is a REAL MYSTERY to me. Wayne Persky is a genius in my book. I am sending all of my wife's experience to several doctors that I trust, and hopefully the word will spread.MY WIFE AND I ARE EXTREMELY GRATEFUL TO WAYNE PERSKY FOR HIS SUPERB BOOK, AND HIS DILIGENCE IN RESEARCHING THIS COMPLEX AND DEBILITATING CONDITION.
I self-diagnosed about 7-8 years ago with hashimoto's. I expressly asked doctors at the time if i should remove gluten from my diet and everyone of them said that gluten has nothing to do with autoimmune issues (except for celiac). Now, after recently discovering that palm oil is causing an allergic reaction in me (and possibly also increasing my anti-thyroglobulin antibodies - ATG), I've started doing some serious digging one again to get the root of my somewhat recent more grave digestive problems. I'm glad that I ended up seeing a good gastroenterologist who after running some stool tests on me told me directly that he would rather not give me any pills (as they have bad side effects particularly on the long run) and suggested I experiment changes in my diet (based on FODMAP list).About a month ago I bought this book from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Enteroimmunology-Prevention-Treatment-Chronic-Inflammatory/dp/1502706946/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481449994&sr=8-1&keywords=enteroimmunology. I recommend people who have digestive problems buy Enteroimmunology first and, if troubled by autoimmune issues and/or colitis, also get this one. It was from the Enteroimmunology book that I fount out that mast cells are also involved in autoimmune diseases and having been diagnosed with rhinitis (since childhood) and dermatographism (about a year and a half ago) - both problems appeared after significant psychological stress - I started searching for as much information as possible on mast cell activation/histamine intolerance. This is where this book is very helpful to me. It confirms my suspicion that stress activates mast cells and/or increases mast cell counts and once activated these cells release interleukins and histamine that are responsible for inflammatory diseases (including inflammation of the digestive system and diabetes). All the research I have been doing on my own so far had led me to the same ideas the author has presented in this book. I finally found some scientific validation for my suspicions. It feels like I have found a last piece of the puzzle in terms of digestion/autoimmunity.To help others understand why I am so convinced the author is correct, I can share my personal experience. After just 2 weeks of following a low histamine diet (meaning I avoided all mast cell triggers and histamine rich foods), I went to the doctor and he saw no sign of rhinitis; of course I was expecting that since I no longer wake up with a stuffy nose, which is in itself a first in maaaaany years. Plus my dermatographia is not as pronounced. The diet is hard! I will not lie to you and some of the info you can find is conflicting, which complicates things even further. My main problem right now is finding out which foods I can eat because after eliminating all possibly problematic foods you are not left with much. What little was left on my list after going though Swiss Interest Group Histamine Intolerance (SIGHI)'s list, various salicylate sensitivity lists and my own discovered intolerances, was put into question by this book (e.g. broccoli, green beans). I still suffer from constipation (my main problem at the moment is constipation and not diarrhea as most people with mast cell issues experience) but my malabsorption issues seem to have lessened. Hopefully, in time, all issues will resolve. What is clear for me after reading this book is how VITAL finding ways to lower stress is! My current problems were triggered by stress and unfortunately the problems definitely continue even after lowering emotional stress. But finding ways to change the way I respond to stress is extremely important given that we live in a society in which stress permeates every single aspect of our lives.Good luck and good health to everyone!
Bought this after my wife was diagnosed with microscopic colitis. Very well written, very well researched. While the author is not a medical professional he did his homework in researching, organizing, and presenting a wealth of very useful information for the patient and family covering the broad range of accepted medical treatments along with nutritional and environmental causes. If you or a family member have been diagnosed with microscopic colitis, do yourself a favor and buy this book. After absorbing it, you will know more than most medical professionals do about this disorder which has only been recognized over the past few decades. It will provide you with the background information you need to work with your doctors on management of this disorder.By the way, I am a health care professional with an earned doctorate with almost 50 years experience in mental health and health care. Mr. Persky did an excellent job.
This book is an amazing compilation of everything known and discovered by the author about MC. Wayne Persky wrote and published this book to help people with this debilitating disease. If you think you've read and tried the suggestions in this book and it didn't work, then you haven't really tried. So reread and try again. I thought the same thing and after my third flare up I decided to completely give into to Wayne's recommendations and completely change my diet and attitude. Sticking to the diet without any exceptions is key. One of the most important suggestions Wayne makes is to watch histamines in the diet. At any rate it's not easy. However at a year in remission, the conclusion is clear. Many thanks, Wayne!
