I love fresh home cooked Mexican food, and I love this cookbook. I learned many things in the first 10 pages and that is just a start. There are full meals and all the recipes to make them. I love this cookbook. If you love fresh Mexican food, and love to cook, I would recommend this book.
Wow, all my favorite recipes in hard copy! I've followed Leslie's cooking blog for years so I was excited to purchase a copy of her book to see if the book was as good as her blog. Yes, it is!A commenter was unhappy about the lack of photos. This cookbook is not a coffee table show-case book. There are pictures in it and they are tastefully done. This cookbook is for taking into the kitchen and using it. The list of ingredients are complete and the direction are clearly written. If you want step-by-step photos, go to her blog: La Cocina de Leslie.Another commenter mentioned the heat level, I have family members, too, that can not handle the typical Mexican heat in a lot of dishes so I cut back on the peppers that have a lot of heat and replace them with ones that are milder. She has included a page (page 16) discussing the various peppers she uses so if you need to adjust the heat, read and substitute with different peppers. And while this particular book is orientated to tacos/savory she has a whole collection of other, just as flavorful, recipes on her blog.Leslie, I hope to see a dessert cookbook and a soup/cazuela cookbook in the future.
This is a really good cookbook but the title is misleading, probably thought up by a publisher that knew the popularity of tacos in the US. It probably should have been named "Practical Home Cooking of Mexico" an that's why I don't make up book titles. It is great book from which you can make tacos (a delivery system) but it's not about the glitz of recipes from a commercial taqueria, Just about all the ingredients are available at your local grocery, if not better thru a local Hispanic foods market. Think of it as a day to day version of Mexico One Plate at a Time.
Its okay. I was disappointed when I flipped through the pages for the first time and noticed that there were no pictures. I love cookbooks with visuals because they give me an idea of what my end result should look like plus its fun. I have had it for 3 months now and haven't used it because it just isn't as appealing w/o the pictures. I will.. eventually.. I'm more likely to return it
I grew up cooking and eating Tex/Mex food. I have been collecting and creating recipes for 40 years. This one has many that I missed because they are authentically Mexican and haven't been adapted to Texas ingredients and taste buds. It also has additional tasty versions of old favorites.Mind you, even Tex/Mex taste buds have grown more sophisticated over the years and appreciate the use of more than cheddar cheese and jalapenos. This authentic Mexican cookbook uses less fat and lard than Mexican cooks did years ago. For that, I am grateful. This book lives up to my high standards of flavor, texture and freshness. It is also a great launching spot for creating your own versions.Since I am familiar with most of the dried chilies she uses, I already know that I will need to tone down many of the recipes. Her palate likes more heat than mine does.I have tried about 6-7 recipes so far and each one was delicious. I used about 1/3 of the heat that she suggested. My favorite chilies are guajillo. They have lots of flavor and are relatively mild on Scoville scale. If she suggested to use 3, I used one, and also a half of a ancho chile for what was suggested (1/2 ancho instead of 3). I love chipotle chilies, but I also use them sparingly. You can always add more heat, but that's a good start if your palate is not up to her heat scale.I am not sure how easy it would be to find the ingredients in a small rural town, but in most cities, they are relatively easy to find. Most were already in my pantry.Her list and descriptions of the Mexican cheeses she uses is the best that I have seen. I will use it as a reference point when selecting cheeses.If you like Mexican food, you will like this cookbook. Recipes were mostly healthy using "real" food (meat, vegetables and fruits).For the novice cook trying to cook authentic Mexican food, it might be a little challenging on the first read, but the recipes are really straight forward and easy. Better yet, they are tasty. I am glad I purchased it.I liked it so well, I sent one to my daughter also.
I'm a cookbook-aholic and a prolific cook and baker. I've made Mexican food all my life and just wanted some inspiration. This book hit the spot! I would say that most people could easily make these recipes and the ingredients are very basic to any Mexican kitchen. I would highly recommend this book to everyone!

Love! I am of Mexican descent and already cook some Mexican food the way my mother taught me, but I really appreciate this book. There are a lot of recipes (not just tacos) I either don't know how to cook, or cook very differently due to living outside of Mexico, so I am excited to have a reference of authentic recipes. Everything in this book would go over well with my family and friends. We live on the border- Mexican food is an absolute must here!! I already have a few friends in mind I want to buy copies for, because my copy is staying mine!!! If anything, I'd like pictures of the dishes, but it doesn't bother me much. *I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.*
