I originally bought this book back in 1997 and used it to aid my development into writing client server (mostly server) applications running under UNIX.This book has been heavily used, and many of the server applications I wrote under unix (up until working with windows 3 years ago) using examples from the book on Signals, Pipes and Sockets (while also using Avanced Unix Programming).Today I dusted off the book as I wanted to write a quick TCP server program using Winsock. I took the example from the book in Sockets and with a couple of very minor tweaks and the stuff to setup winsock I wrote a very simple windows console server application.OK, some of the commands, like close is closesocket, have changed for windows BUT the majority of code came from the book. This book is still aiding me even today.This maybe an old book but well worth that cost (and these days its a fraction of the cost I bought it for).

Chris Brown has written a clear book on the Distributed Progrmming under the UNIX environment. When I started to look into this subject I faced so many barriers cause of lack of clarity and easiness of the other books and materials covering this subject. I have to admit also that I sometimes decided to give the whole thing up. Fortunately, I came across this book and it revived my hope. It is really a good book to start with and deserves of studying. Particular attention should be paid on Sockets. I would however suggest some matterials on the web which could be covered before reading this book. Many examples have worked for me. The way he provides the code examples (which are in C) is also comprehensive and anyone with experience in C should not have problems with understanding them. I would, however, recommend other books (such as Stevens Unix Network Programming and Advanced Programming under the UNIX environment as well as Comer's and Steven's Internetworking with TCP/IP III) to read as a flow-up manuals. One should also test available code (the coplete ones) to have some hands on experience on the subject. Some of the thing did not seem consistent with the author to me.

I am so thankful for this book! It explains everything very well. God had laid it on my heart to start respecting God's feasts from lev.23. Yet I didn't know how or why. So finally through this book and Dr. Michael Lake ' s views I really understand and feel so blessed. I want to follow God's word and Christ's example on how he lived. ..not man's traditions. I also had a hard time explaining to my Christian friends and family why I was doing this...now I know how to answer them. I wish I could get them all to read this so they'll understand and want to celebrate God's feasts too!

Wonderful exploration of the feasts of the bible and how Christ fulfilled them. Anyone who enjoys tying the old and new testament together will really enjoy this book and what it has to offer!

I learned about this book on Sid Roth's It's Supernatural. This is a great primer on the Biblical feasts for anyone wishing to follow their faith like Yeshua (Jesus) did. As I've been in the Messianic church for over 2 years I knew a lot of this already. This is the perfect book to read this month before so many Holy days.

I was very excited to get this book, since it was recommended on The Last Shofar, a great book on the last days and the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. Whereas Celebrating Jesus in the Biblical Feasts has a lot of great information about the meaning of each one of the feasts God gave to the people of Israel in Leviticus 23 plus the Feast of Purim and the Feast of Hanukkah, the author saves no time in telling the reader about his other "great" books and learning material that can be PURCHASED from his website! I didn't find anything for free on Booker's website.A lot of preachers have made a business out of what the good Lord has taught them through the Bible. Is this the right thing to do? The name of God seems to equal a $ sign before the Name! I'll let God be the judge. I was taken aback at how many times throughout the book the author recommends the reader to purchase another one of this books. His other books might be wonderful, but as for me the credibility of this man has been put to question.

Some good stuff, but be discerning as he misses much and holds to the theory of Israel being re-established as an earthly kingdom, with the feasts being celebrated again.

Dr. Booker will help you lose those Westernized lenses and clarify some of the true meanings behind the questions that only the Old Testement can reveal.

Interesting read. Good information regarding nutrition.

I've been trying to learn computer programming recently and realized that I needed a good understanding of the computer science fundamentals. So I was drawn to buy this book because I appreciate good storytelling. Furthermore, the fundamentals of computer science explained in story form??? Sign me up! I was pretty impressed by the content and would recommend it to anyone who is trying to learn the basics of computer science.My only complain about this book is that some chapters were poorly explained compared to other chapters. So there is a lack of consistency throughout the book. It was a good read for the first couple of chapters but the remaining was just too difficult to comprehend even after spending many hours/days on it! Needless to say, I am completely aware that computer science is a subject that takes times to fully grasp its concepts but some chapters in the book could use simpler terms and explanations for a college student like myself.

A book that would bring together computer science with popular literature and movies was a must buy for me; I now own both the book and audiobook! However, the chapters in this are like Hollywood releases: occasional hits, most quickly forgotten, and several flops.I will illustrate my summary in terms of a tv cooking competition...Professor Erwig is a master of his field, like the talented chefs in the shows. He is provided the unorthodox ingredients of fairy tales and popular movies to compose a textbook on computing. Most of the creative dishes he concocts are a testament to his own ability, but not necessarily something that should be in a cookbook in everyone’s kitchen.There is a pleasant progression of tastes through the book, from various CS appetizers to the dessert of ‘Abstraction’. The skill demonstrated in each chapter is sometimes in how well Dr. Erwig flavors the CS concept by using the cultural references, and other times it is how he has to transform the story to work with the topic. For example: “Sherlock Holmes manipulates data structures when solving a crime” is a discussion of Holmes organizing a list of suspects not about his famous deductions. The chewiness of each chapter varies in conjunction.Those who will most appreciate what Dr. Erwig has crafted will already be in possession of a refined palate. Those looking to refine their palate will find some benefit from this experience, but will need to continue sampling other offerings.RECOMMENDATIONS:Computer Science’s growing influence on everyday life is motivating the integration of CS into K12 schools. However, that leaves out the other 76% of the population who are no longer students! We need more books/movies/songs/shows/etc attempting to introduce these concepts in new relatable and approachable ways. Algorithms to Live By & Computational Fairy Tales are similar books that are worth checking out.

I'm new to learning about computer science and this books is great in breaking down what an algorithm is and how it works. The language of the book is precise and clear, which was really helpful in defining the parts of the algorithm.

This book isn't about personal computers or computer software, instead it's about how we all compute solutions to small problems in our daily lives without even realizing it and how the field of computer science formalizes those processes.He uses widely known stories and characters (Hansel and Gretel, Harry Potter, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, etc.) as examples to help guide the material, which keeps the book from being too dry even when getting into the nitty gritty.Not all of this book is easy reading, but if you have a genuine interest in learning more about computer science and problem solving then I don't know of a better way short of spending four years (and a lot of money) at a university.

I liked this book a lot, because you get so many different things in it! Excerpts from classic books about the sea and sailing, poems, etc, plus practical knowledge such as knot tying and signalling, plus stories about famous sailors, both modern-day and of olden times. For an excellent all-around look at ships and the sea, get this book. Plus...check out the size of the wave on the cover!!

Great pictures, great stories. This is a big book with huge, spectacular photos. Terrific gift.

I have loved the sea and its stories my entire life, so when I received "To the Sea" I was elated. From a photographic point of view, this book is, in my opinion, unequaled. The pictures are astounding... wonderful color, great action, and there are many several-page fold-outs. I enjoyed very much the inclusion of ancient and modern excerpts from the works of many varied authors-- from Edgar Allen Poe to Joshua Slocum, from Coleridge to Hal Roth-- each with a unique perspective on the sea. But there is a downside to this in many ways amazing book. There are so many grammatical and technical errors that it makes the reader (at least this reader) wonder if it was ever edited. Spelling errors, begun-yet-not-completed-sentences, bad grammar, and a generally poor grasp of engaging writing left me, while spellbound by the pictures and poems contained within, more than a little upset. Instead of becoming lost in the stories or accounts, I found myself anticipating spelling mistakes or wondering when the next run-on sentence would occur. Meisel obviously knows what he is talking about, but presents it in such a "research paper" fashion that it is difficult to really appreciate the end result. In addition, he sometimes seems rushed to get his ideas down, and in the process does not develop them as he should. His descriptions of voyages and sagas on the sea throughout history are short and lack a depth someone so versed in the sea could have brought across. I was constantly left thinking, "man... if only there were another paragraph or two on this topic..." If Meisel would have taken the time to expand his thoughts further, the reader would be that much more taken. "To the Sea" could easily have been 50 to 100 pages longer, and would be better for it. On the whole, though, it is worth reading, and in many areas quite memorable. And, as said before, the photographs are unbelievable. If you love the sea, it is a worthwhile addition to your library. If you are an English professor, stick to the pictures.

The chapters that were of most interest to me were the ones on "Racing Against the Elements" and the one on "Storms and Disasters." I have been in many types of racing and was involved in the rescue of a sinking sailboat in a stormy race where a sailor almost lost his life, but thanks to the help of all sailors involved, the person was saved. This chapter on disasters would be to ever sailors advantage to read and know details. I will leave the chapter on "Sirens and Serpents" for you to read and reach your own conclusions, for we all dread the serpents we think live in the sea and we all fantaize of the mermaids that may also live in the sea! As a final comment, if you also love pictures of the sea, this book has some of the best!

I really enjoyed cycling along with Chris and Dea as they encountered walls that seemed insurmountable (yet managed to get over them - sometimes, literally) and met dozens of people who helped restore a sense of goodness remaining in humanity (minus a couple border check point police...). Never in a gazillion years would I undertake what they did - so I'm especially appreciative of being an armchair traveler with them. How they survived temperatures (both inhumanely cold and hot), illnesses, cranky knees, an eye infection, and bicycle mishaps is incredible. I'm glad that Chris chose to share this journey with us all. Can't wait for his 3rd book! (Hi, Dea!!)

I've read many cycling journals of cyclists making their dreams into reality. I had my own dream, albeit a little less dramatic, of riding across America an my recumbent trike. I read Chris's first book prior to my attempt and then I read this, his second book, after completing my own journey on June 4, 2018. I could feel the emotions he wrote about, as memories of my own journey came flooding back after only a few months since my finish. I enjoyed both books immensely.

Seldom do I review books. I'm an avid amateur cyclist, and I've read countless books on cyclists that have traveled the USA, and the world. Of all the "world touring" books. This is my favorite. You root for the two lovebirds. Good on ya Chris for a great story. I hope you married Dea, and I hope your write more. Thanks!

What a wonderful adventure! Having both read the first book, my husband and I couldn't wait to get our hands on the sequel. Chris's writing brings this amazing account of their round the world adventure to life. His observations are witty and the descriptions of both people and places colourful. A thourougly entertaining read for both cyclists and adventurers - even if your adventuring is happening in your armchair!

I have read both of Chris's books and have thoroughly enjoyed them. His writing is honest and funny, and his willingness to be the butt of his own jokes exposes a witty, wise author.

This continues right where book one left off, and it is such a great addition. Chris’ dry humour and chance encounters with other people along the road make this a book where you can’t guess whats coming next. Can’t wait for the third one!
