About the Author

Mary Crawford is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Women’s Studies Program at the University of Connecticut. She has taught the psychology of women and gender for twenty-five years, most of that time at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, where she earned the Trustee’s Achievement Award for lifetime professional accomplishment. She has also held the Jane W. Irwin Chair in Women’s Studies at Hamilton College, served as Distinguished Visiting Teacher/Scholar at Trenton State College at The College of New Jersey, and directed the graduate program in women’s studies at the University of South Carolina. She received her Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of Delaware. Professor Crawford is a consulting editor of Psychology of Women Quarterly, an associate editor of Feminism and Psychology, and a Fellow of both the American Psychological Society and the American Psychological Association. Mary Crawford has spoken and written about women’s studies issues for audiences as diverse as the British Psychological Society, Ms. Magazine, and the Oprah Winfrey show. Excellent for New and seasoned clinicians

I loved this book. I've been in the field for a while but am in the process of preparing to start at a private practice. This book has 26 cases that are all unique and teach you very important therapist skills. Morrison provides a little dialogic and then asks you to write down what you would say next. He usually gives a few examples of what you could say and then goes over what is better and what is actually harmful based on his enormous experiences. Best part is it teaches you to work up a differential diagnosis for clients so you can be sure you have looked at every angle and then reducing the difference till diagnosis to what it really is. I know for sure that my head will continue to use those techniques with every client and I feel 10x prepared for the clients that show up in the gray area of diagnosis. Easy to read and love his writing style. I'll be buying all of his books he writes as it is extreeely useful.It'd like Morrison is holding your hand the whole way ax a supervisor and really builds yoir confidence in it.

Faye Levy is an established cookbook writer who is offering a book on Middle Eastern cooking which closely parallels the range of Claudia Roden's classic book on Middle Eastern food. Beans are common and used more creatively than in many cuisines. Wine and vinegar use is very small. Pork and cured pork products make no appearance at all. Breads and pasta are limited in variety, although those which do appear are distinctive. New world vegetables appear, but mostly as fresh rather than cooked ingredients. Fin fish and squid appear, but bivalves are uncommon.Levy and Roden concentrate on different geographical boundaries, with Roden including and Levy excluding North Africa west of Egypt, although Levy still includes reference to famous Morrocan features such as couscous and tangines. Levy identifies the primary regions of Middle Eastern cookery as the Eastern Mediterranean (Turkey, Levant, Egypt), Iran (Persia) and the arabian peninsula and Iraq.Levy discusses very little of the historical background but does discuss some of the says the cuisine has been influenced by India and how it has in turn influenced Europe, especially the Balkans; however, Roden goes into this in more detail. Levy's wraps her discussion in more of a linguistic focus, being careful to give the various different names of dishes for different nationalities.Both books divide the dishes into many similar categories. On examining recipes from the two books for the same dish, I believe there is little to choose in the clarity of presentation, although I would give a slight not to Roden for spelling out the regional variations.Both writers were born in the Middle East and both appear to be thoroughly in touch with their subject. Neither is here just for a brief visit. Both have also produced books on Jewish cuisine, so it is not surprising that these volumes concentrate much more on the Muslem cuisine than on any Jewish dishes.Levy includes a chapter on menus for entertaining and give a somewhat more detailed discussion of spice mixes. Levy also includes recipes for pantry items such as stocks. I recommend anyone wishing to make stocks for these recipes stick with a good French, Culinary Institute, or Cooks Illustrated Best Recipe source.Levy's book has 380 pages for $30 and Roden has 490 pages for $35. If I were picking one book, I would take Roden based on the deeper historical perspective, the more interesting geographical range, and the (I suspect) more valid separation of Turkish cuisine from that of the Levant. If you were primarily interested as a source for entertaining and most especially interested in the Arab cuisine, then Levy's book may give you more of what you want. Both are superior books on a regional cuisine. I give it only four stars because it did not teach me anything really new about cooking and cuisine. You may have a different background, so I leave that open to your judgement. I love this book! The author, Faye Levy, offers the readers an excellent overview of the Middle Eastern cuisine, along with interesting recipes for the dishes that hail from different countries in the region.

My food-obsessed son gave me this cookbook one Christmas. It was a gift to the whole family. Now, in addition to our standard Thanksgiving dinner, we have a collection of favorites from Feast from the Mideast that we prepare together when we want a meal that lives up to the word "feast". We are most impressed with the Chicken Bulgar Pecan patties. My daughter is a big fan of the desserts. I find them unnecessary, as I am quite satisfied by this cuisine which relies heavily on olive oil, lemon juice and lots of vegetables.

Edward G. Carmines is Warner O. Chapman Professor of Political Science and Rudy Professor at Indiana University. He is also the director of the Center on American Politics and the research director at the Center on Congress at Indiana University. I love this small little book, it is so concise and well-written. Carmines provides excellent examples that illustrate each of the aspects of reliability and validity so well. If you only buy one book on reliability and validity it should be this book.

I needed this for my research and found the price, quality and content to be exactly what I was looking for. Worth the price.

A small little book one the Sage Series that we enjoy so much. For a new person that wants to understand the basic theory behind, Validity and Reliability , the Carmine and Zeller book is a little jewel, that have stood the test of time. 12/07/2016 - 12/13/2016I chose this book because anything faith based interests me; the Amish & Mennonite faith also interests me. I don't lie, the title was one of the first to grab my attention and then the synopsis. I related well to lead female character Hannah because I too have dealt with something in which I felt God would never forgive. I did not face the sane situation as Hannah, but it was difficult all the same and I still strive to earth & take care of my body everyday. It's hard..I recommend this book to anyone, especially if you are battling a personal situation (whatever it might be,) I want you to know you aren't and are never alone. There are ppl who can relate to you, who care about you, and moist important, God cares. You DO matter.

SPOILER ALERT: I feel the need to put in this alert because the subject of this book may be an emotional trigger to some men and women. What this book deals with is Post Abortion Syndrome. Hannah, a young Amish woman, is happily married, but suffers from depression. She is also unable to have children. Her secret is that she had an abortion at 18. This story is from a Christian, pro-life viewpoint, but it is written in a very compassionate, nonjudgmental way. It deals with Hannah's journey to forgiving herself, accepting the fact that God forgave her, and eventually using her experience to help others. The book shows how one event can affect so many lives, and can cause so much heartache- but how even this can lead to peace and happiness. Because this is a Christian novel, I honestly don't know if it would be for everyone, but it deals with the subject of abortion in a very compassionate light.

I’ve had this on my kindle for almost a year, and I have wanted to get to it earlier. It really speaks to the reader with quotes like: “if he’d only known the outcome of his actions.” And, “Choices made, whether bad or good, follow you forever & affect everyone in their path one way or another.” I cannot give my favorite without revealing too much of the book, but this was another favorite: “there is NOTHING unforgivable & there are no secrets before an all-knowing merciful God.” And, in the author’s words: “God is more than a salvager. He is a blessed redeemer. God not only forgives, He restores.” This book is definitely thought-provoking!! I’m very interested in reading more from this author.

An Unforgivable Secret ( Amish Secrets-Book 1 )by: J.E.B. SpredemannThis is the first book in Amish Secrets and What a start for a series. Wow, what a beautiful, heart breaking story. I don’t think I have ever read anything in the Amish like this story. I loved the story and the characters. At Times I felt like knocking one of the characters up side of the head. This is Hannah’s story and I felt so sorry and sad for her. She is holding onto a very deep secret that she thinks she cannot tell anyone. While I was reading I had tears rolling down my face most of the time. When I started reading An Unforgivable Secret I could not put it down. I had not liked much finishing when my kindle went out on me and I had to put it on charge. So I did the one thing I do not like to do, I plugged it up and kept on reading till I finished. It was so much going on that I had no idea how it would end. There is a lesson for all of us in this story, Jesus died for our sins and we need turn it all over to him , He will forgive us if we just ask Him.Thank Spredemann for another good one.

Okay so I am only half way through the book. But there seriously seems to be a chapter of information missing, we go from chapter 4, Hannah and Samuel have not done anything inappropriate, to chapter 6 when Hannah remembers how he said he loved her and they "sinned" Well He said no such thing in my copy! It even states in chapter 5 that he didn't even write her a goodbye letter. He just left in the middle of the night for Ohio so he wouldn't be tempted to date her after she found out her boyfriend and his best friend was cheating on her. I even went back and re read in case I missed it. Its completely taking me out of a very good story so far. So I guess we the reader just imagine that some place they had sex or feelings for each other? Really ruined an otherwise great story so far.***Chapter 16 we finally have a "flash back" that explains it all. An overused trope, Would have much preferred reading about it as it happened.****The story goes on for several chapters after we have our resolution. Just being more pain, harsh judgments and praising over and over again God's forgiveness to the point it a bit absurd. Did not finish.

This is NOT a fluffy HEA Amish romance. I read this book without reading any of the reviews; so I didn't have any idea how heavy it would be. By the time I'd waded through the first half, I'd made up my mind to return it for a refund. It was so rife with tragedy and seemed so messy that I saw no hope of the HEA I love about the Amish romances I'd read up to this one. But I toughed it out, finished it, and have changed my mind about requesting a refund. Early on, I realized that this book made a powerful point about the very serious consequences careless actions--even ones that may seem minor--can have, as well as the reality that regardless of the provocation, we will all have to deal with the consequences of our actions. Beyond those, though, it makes other points, i.e., (1) no matter how serious what we've done may seem (or be),we're better off not trying to keep it a secret, and (2) no matter how badly we've messed up our lives, they are NEVER beyond salvaging. Since I wholeheartedly agree with all of these morals to the story (regardless of whether it's easy to glean such messages from our own lives or not), I think this is a VERY worthwhile read. I just hope that you read some review to prepare you for something other than a fluffy romance before you "dig in."

Great movie, creative writing. This movie had more substance than 85% of the movies that came out last year. It's totally worth it to read the screenplay and watch the movie. If you are a filmmaker, it's a great film to learn from. i know I did.

My choice for Best Picture but typically the Hollywood machine didn't think so enough even to nominate it. It is worth the price of a ticket jus to hear Emma Thompson deliver the punchline which I won't repeat so as not to spoil it for those of you who really should rent this movie.

Dr. Montgomery studied geology at Stanford and geomorphology at UC Berk. He has travelled widely and studied how cultures fail when they let their soil erode. His writing style is superior as is his commitment to his subject of interest. If you w ant to get down in the dirt about how to survive, this is the most important book to read. I rarely put my Oasis down before I finished it. My primary interest now is soils. My mission is to do things as close to perfectly on my one quarter of an acre. The first premise is no tilling, using cover crops, composting, and moving into planting as many perennial food trees, shrubs, etc. as I can fit in.Read it, read it. read it. Do not let whatever soil you have blow away or wash away. Cherish your dirt as the most important thing you have because it is.

This is the dirt (the scoop) all right. It is a highly important book. Every policy maker in Washington and all the world's capitals should read it. This book gives a side of history that has been left out of the usual history books. And that is really too bad. This information needs to become widely known.There are a variety of eye-openers here, about numerous periods of history. This book not only teaches about agriculture and the misuse of land and soil, it also reveals a side of colonialism we usually do not think about. This colonialism has not yet completely disappeared.From another perspective: Never before have I appreciated the "humble" earthworm so much as I have since reading it. I never knew about rock weathering and the fact that earthworms literally create soil from rocks. We should bow down to earthworms. They make it possible for us to eat and live.The writing style is easily read. Yet emotionally, I find it hard to read more than one chapter at a time. I seem to need rest between them. They are very filling.

I had first learned about the destruction of Carthage and North Africa during the Roman Empire during an economic botany course in the 70’s. I also learned about the findings of environmental destruction determined from rodent middens studies in the Holy Land, Lebanon, Chaco Canyon, and other sites. Dirt provides a thorough chronical of the widespread degradation of soils by many other cultures throughout human history.Being a geologist, Montgomery tends to look at the situation in terms of dirt when the real harm is the loss of organic matter and the critical soil biology which are critical components of soil. Dirt is not soil. He paid only passing reference to soil biology and what he generally calls microbes. He could have made Dirt more relevant by including the work of soil microbiologists such as Elaine Ingham et. al. who have provided substantial research into the role of soil biology in plant growth and health.Dirt is a good and insightful book that would be important for environmentalist and agriculturalist to read along with American Canopy.

Are humans capable of learning from past mistakes? I consider myself more soil literate than most people, enough to recognize the process of desertification on the ground. I’ve long read about the rise and fall of civilizations based on the health of their soils. However, David Montgomery’s “Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations” provided a deeper, more riveting account of the repeated rise and fall, rise and fall, rise and fall of civilizations due to failure to learn from the past.Walking the reader through a history of agriculture throughout the world, Montgomery introduces different soil types and climate issues, as well as the social-political circumstances that contributed toward erosion and collapse of past civilizations. While some regions lost their soil and permanently collapsed, others recovered enough to allow the same mistakes to play out again and again.In general, agriculture and urban centers arose, cultivating the most favorable, typically level plots. Food production enabled a bigger population, which then added pressure to deforest and plow hilly uplands, resulting in a surge of erosion. Sometimes too slowly to perceive in human terms, erosion deteriorated the uplands and often buried the lowlands. Crop harvests crashed, and people either starved or migrated elsewhere, leading to collapse of civilization after a few centuries. The land was abandoned. Nature began to form new soil from bedrock, and many centuries later, people returned to make the same mistakes all over again.Not only did the boom and bust cycle repeat, but keen observers such as Aristotle and Plato diagnosed the problem and witnessed the remains of past civilizations, yet, they too were unable to change the outcome.It is easy to imagine some future soil sleuth will write a book about the collapse of the American empire due to soil loss. Maybe they will even find an old, tattered copy of Dirt: The Erosion of Civilization, and they will see that David Montgomery, like Aristotle and Plato, strived to call attention to the health of the soil.Better yet, let’s all read Montgomery’s book now and increase our soil awareness to avoid becoming trapped in the cycle of doom.

I found this book to be so engaging and informative, I have been giving them out as gifts. While I work in agriculture and know more than your average bear about soil, David Montgomery's book Dirt gave me a whole new insight and forever changed the way I look at society's relationship with soil and agriculture.I just ordered his newest book, The Hidden Half of Nature: The Microbial Roots of Life and Health, and cannot wait to dive in deeper on the topic.

Every person should take the time to read this revealing book. It talks about the world today, not some questionable computer model for the future. The earth is running out of fertile soil and the vast frontiers of new virgin land are gone. The agricultural practices of modern technology vs. the population growth are not sustainable. It's not too late, there are ways to learn the lessons of the past and do it right. The solution will take time, education and sacrifice. The book presents the hard evidence---you walk on it every day. Who will embrace the facts and be part of the solution?
