Cory and Harlan are two names in the digital forensics community that you can always trust to bring you great material. This book is packed full of resources for a wide variety of uses. What I love most about the book is that pros are able to learn new methods and tools from it while students are able to easily pick up the book and get started. This is one of those books that I truly feel is perfectly tied to a quote made famous by Isaac Newton "If I have seen further it is by standing on (the) shoulders of Giants." Everyone can easily learn an enormous amount from these two authors and their career long adventures and experiences with digital forensics.I teach digital forensic classes at the grad school level and also at a non-profit; in both classes to students of a wide range of skills I always recommend this book as a must read. It has something for everyone.

As Cory and Harlan state in the introduction, this book is intended for two audiences; new forensic practitioners and experienced digital forensics practitioners new to open source tools. I believe they have succeeded in providing top-notch material for both audiences. Several excellent five star reviews have already been posted, which I agree with wholeheartedly. In order to avoid simply rehashing these existing reviews, I would like to simply state that I believe Cory and Harlan did two things very well with DFWOST:1. As Cory and Harlan state in the introduction to Chapter 2, "Being able to build software properly is critical for an examiner using open source tools". Speaking as a seasoned examiner that consistently leverages the majority of the tools in DFWOST, we sometimes forget that the configuration of various interpreters (Perl, Python, Ruby) and the proper installation of tools from source are a difficult task for those new to open source tools. This technical hurdle often inhibits the adoption of open source utilities by even senior analysts. I believe Cory and Harlan had this hurdle in mind when authoring DFWOST, as they provide their readers with valuable information regarding these tasks. Chapter 2 does an excellent job of stepping the reader through the installation of various interpreters and utilities for both the Linux and Windows environments. Before I read DFWOST, I was curious if Cory and Harlan would leverage an available Linux-based live distro and bypass the topic of installation and configuration of an examination system all together. I was happy to see they they did not take this route, as dependency on a live distro can simply add a layer of abstraction for a new student.2. Instead of bloating DFWOST with content that has been covered in depth in existing publications, Cory and Harlan opt to simply direct readers to these resources. Given both the author's resumes (and previous publications), they could of easily supplied this information in DFWOST to unnecessarily bulk this book up. For instance, when the topic of advanced Windows Registry analysis is mentioned, the reader is directed to Harlan's Windows Registry Forensics. This may be construed as self-serving, but the same is done when the topic of Windows binary (PE) analysis is entered. In this case, the reader is directed towards Malware Analyst's Cookbook by Ligh, Adiar, Hartstein, and Richard. In my opinion, both these publications are the definitive sources for their perspective topics. It is refreshing to see the authors direct their readers to the appropriate place, instead of diving into a topic that probably doesn't have the appropriate real estate dedicated for discussion in the first place.As with any material these two authors provide to the community, DFWOST should be required reading for any examiner - not just open source hobbyists and newbies. I hope we see another great publication from both Cory and Harlan in the near future. They make a good team.

That's a huge book! It explains very well what to collect, why to collect, how to collect E-evidences and then it explains how to work on your findings with open-source tools.A lot of work has been put in that book. You definitely feel the sweat of the author putting all information together, the testing, the results.If you start in Digital Forensics it might be slightly complex but it can easily be your second or third book in that matter.If you're already an IT engineer or passionate and you want to explore the deep technical bit of digital forensics then go for it. It's a treasure of information.Do prefer the paperback version because you will love putting annotation and highlighting some lines to keep them in mind and for further usage. I have the Kindle edition but I consider buying the paperback as well just to keep it under my arm on my desk.

First let me start off by saying that the Amazon packaging was terrible and likely the reason the book looked 'used' instead of new when I received it. In order to get better packaging you might want to order this book with other books.-----The author does not make the assumption that everyone reading the book will be familiar with what Open Source Software is and goes in to a little bit of detail on the subject. As a FOSS advocate I was appreciative of the effort put in to educate others on this subject.Chapter 2:This chapter is about getting your forensic computer setup with FOSS tools and applications. It covers setups on Linux and Windows, but with a preference towards Ubuntu (Linux) as this is what the author used and what the examples are done with.Chapter 3:Covers the basics of how to analyze disks. This includes covering ram slack, file slack, file systems specifics, carving and hashing. It is important to know how to handle evidence if will be needed in a court room. Failure to use hashes and load a disk as read only will likely result in evidence being questioned and potentially thrown out.Chapter 4:Covers Windows specific file systems artifactsChapter 5:Covers Linux specific file systems artifactsChapter 6:Covers OS specific file system artifactsChapter 7:Covers browser artifacts for IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari. It also covers email artifacts. I was particularly interested by the Chrome and Safari artifacts.Chapter 8:Deals with file analysis covering media files, documents and others. It was interesting to note that there does not appear to be any ability for Open Source tools to leverage known hashes to identify files known to law enforcement.Chapter 9:Automating the process -- trust me you do not want to have to do everything by hand.Chapter 10:Covered free, but not open source tools that are available.Overall I found the book to have a solid mix of theory and tool use examples. It also included links to forensic images you can use to experiment with the tools. I already played with many of these images with proprietary tools a while back and look forward to exploring how open source tools work with them as well.Solid book diminished only by the inept packaging Amazon utilized. If the book were not so good I would be returning the book.

Bought this book ages ago and wouldn't be the artist that I am today without it. Book goes into how to draw every ethnicity and every time period female in an easy to memorize format. Illustrations are gorgeous and the book challenges you to think outside the box. There's also a beautiful message tucked in about how we are all connected. This is a must have for every artist!

This book can be broken down in basically two parts.Now like my title says, this is a good START. It breaks down all people into 3 core groups: Mongoloid, Negroid, and Caucasoid. Unfortunately there is very little difference in this manga artist's style when it comes to the three different types they try to describe. There's also a small section about body type diversity within these three base groups. I wish there was actually more on that, but it only really spans 2 pages. The artist goes over different techniques of inking and using tone to color hair and darker skin tones. There is also a small section on light source and tones. All of this is in the the first 3rd of the book.The rest of the 2/3rds of the book (sans the last few pages) Goes over "traditional" clothing for different countries as well as some "traditional mythology" fashion, and a few "modern" outfits as well. It does a basic break down of each outfit and with some, you're even shown how they are traditionally put on and worn. In multiple drawings you're also shown how the body looks underneath the clothing.While I do think that the first portion of the book may only give beginning artists a small step in the proper direction to drawing diverse characters, the last 2/3rds of the book are well worth it.Overall for a more experienced artists, while this is a nice thing to have in a collection it's not going to teach you too much you don't already know. HOWEVER for newer artists this is certainly a fantastic book to pick up and learn from.

Good, clear illustrations for learning how to draw people better. One caveat: I purchased this for my goddaughter, and her mother felt like some of the illustrations (particularly the nude ones) needed a little 'help' from a black Sharpie in case one of her boys picked up this book. Fortunately, it's really only three or four pages that might cross a line. The rest is great!

I first saw this book in passing a few years ago, was very impressed by it's flow and concept. But I was too broke to buy it then, but it made me think. I have since completed an art degree, and put my faith in specific research and reference for a project where the subject of nationality or ethnicity would be crucial. But this text still remains a good starting point for a quick and dirty way to cartoon regional features without going out and doing an anthropological study yourself.But like I said, this is a good reference for history, exotic costuming and an overview of how to start cartooning ethnic differences.

I like these Japanise drawing books, makes things much simplier, especially if you are into cartoon caracters. Great for any artist. It helped me out on my hand drawings, feet and other drawing of body parts that we tend to shy away from in the drawing world.

Excellent condition! A bit more risqué than I previously assumed, but lovely instruction.

Yes, there are nudes, but (most) are tasteful. This book helped me alot with character creation and facial expressions. I'd say that (if you are a mature adult) this book is not only a great asset to your collection, but a neccesity if you need any help with character portrayal.

I had to read this book for a college theater class and fell in love with it. I had a hard time putting it down because it really does raise awareness of civil war in other countries, especially the Congo. This play reads incredibly easily, almost like a novel. It's hard putting each character to a face at first but as you continue reading the personalities blossom and it's easy to establish who is who. The worst part is though, that it's hard to see which side of the revolution is right because the egregious things BOTH of them do. This play captivates the audience on the poor women caught in the middle.

A friend saw this play and gave it rave reviews. So I bought it, read the first page, and didn't pick it up for a year and a half because I was afraid of what it would do to me to read it. When I finally got the courage to pick it up and finish it I was annoyed that I hadn't done so sooner. Nottage is the real deal.

Pulitzer-prize-winning indeed. Every time you think you know how she'll adjust her characters, she digs another direction, or does something newly truthful. "Ruined" is so descriptive, on so many levels. She's drawn such a visceral picture of it - living in a state of war is something we've never accepted as real....... it's beginning to surround us and bears thinking about.

This play is great! It is very emotionally gripping and was extremely well researched by the author to be as good of a representation of the real situation in the Congo as possible. I highly recommend it to all readers and especially to those active in the theater community. And if you get the chance to see this play, jump on it!!!

Such a strong story and so beautifully written. The final scenes still resonate with me. Why do wars always begin and end with the women? as if those who possess the women are those who possess the power.

No complaints whatsoever

I read the play. Now I wish I could see it live. Several plays I've read are just chatter. Not this one. The playwright had something to say, and she said it well.

These essays were collected and published posthumously, by Winnicott's widow, Clare, and colleagues. British pediatrician, humanitarian, and ground-breaking psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott died in 1971, having made a nearly immeasurable contribution to the fields of psychoanalysis and child psychology. In this volume, as with his other writings, his ideas are deep, reverential and respectful, and often somewhat complex, and at the same time, his presentation is utterly simple and straightforward. The reader is fully engaged, as a result of Winnicott's incredible knack for connecting with his audience.The lively and interesting papers comprising this utterly accessible collection were written over a wide span of time - three decades or more. The selections are varied, and have been separated for readerly convenience into several sections: "Health and Illness," "The Family," and, finally, "Reflections on Society." Some were written in order to be presented at meetings of the medical and/or psychoanalytic community; others, to various civic, political, and other groups (The Progressive League, The Liberal Magazine, The Borstal Assistant Governors' Conference, etc.)The collection is various and interesting for its content but also for - not in spite of - its grab-bag feel. Winnicott was comfortable with his listeners, and never afraid to speak simply, clearly, and with his trademark empathy intact. In fact, that empathy was at the core of his work. There's a great variety in it, too. "The Price of Disregarding Psychoanalytic Research," a talk given in 1965, details the importance of his philosophy. ("The link between poetic truth and scientific truth is surely in the person, in you and me.") Essays such as the 1963 "The Value of Depression" ("Always, depression implies ego strength...") and the 1967 "Delinquency as a Sign of Hope" ("the antisocial tendency is linked inherently with deprivation" ) show Winnicott at his very best. And the playful and kind 1969 "The Pill and the Moon" - written for an address to the Progressive League in the 1960's - is wonderful.Some of these hopeful and kindhearted essays show their age, but in a welcome and lovely way, and therefore each is well worth reading and thinking about.

A simple, yet superb compliment to psychodynamic therapy, and very helpful in understanding oneself. It is certainly an important work.

There are a group of psychoanalysts that I recommend: WInnicott: Fromm: Horney. This Psychoanalyst really stands out as readable with good ideas.

Need the book for college and got it cheaper than at the bookstore. Was also very quick at my house

i am not so sure that winnicott would have published the transcripts and texts included in the book - at least not in that form... probably a man with charisma, his lectures must have been very attractive but when you read the printed text, obviously unrevised - hmmmand gee, i'm not a fan of feminists, but the allegations he makes on the poor women. it's funny at times but, let's face it, weather we like them or not, women can vote thanks to feminists...

This book is not found in my university. I hope readable essays in this book. Winnicott is in British independent school. Balint and Winnicott is read in Japan by psychologists and psychoanalysts.

This book is so amazing. I’m always leery of buying a craft book that says it uses “supplies you already have around the house.” I don’t usually keep empty toilet paper rolls, a pile of old magazines, or buckets of beads around my house. Surprisingly, as I looked through the book to make my shopping list, there were very few things that I didn’t already have. All the projects have only a few supplies needed, that you probably do have or can buy cheaply at the $1 store. They are rated 1-5 on messiness. The 5’s aren’t that messy if you use precautions. On each page it shows you what that project will be helping your child with (fine motor skills, colors, sensory development, counting, etc.). Since you know what your child is learning , you can talk them through each step. Above all, they are all a lot of fun and my 3 year-old granddaughter begs to do them every day. I’m thrilled with this book.

I I love how the book is organized and that the activities are simple and easy enough for a busy parent or teacher to do with their kids. Most only require supplies that I already have around the house, which is a major bonus! As a parent of two kids who has done many activities with them over the last 4 or so years, I can say that this book is filled with activities that kids will actually find engaging and want to do over and over again. If you are looking for simple ways to engage your kids with learning and fun, this is the book for you!

This book is so well organized and well thought out! I purchased this for a friend whose son is 18 months old. In flipping through it, I found lots of activities that my own kids would enjoy, who aren't even toddlers anymore! I also loved the "messiness rating" on each activity-this is a great way know just how big of a mess to expect, which is important with toddlers! I just gave it to my friend this weekend and she was absolutely thrilled and SO excited to start trying these out with her little boy! Overall, this is such a great resource for parents or preschool teachers!

I just got this book in the mail today. I thumbed through it and see lots of activities that will be fun for my grandson (soon to be 3) to do when he's here with Nana (me). The book is well organized, colorful and yet written to simplify how to do the activities, and uses mostly things that I have or can get inexpensively. One of the first pages I saw was 'Dancing Popcorn Kernels' which I think he will love! There are many activities for holidays-the index will be very helpful in finding them. Thanks Angela!

Please note I received a review copy of this book. Oh my goodness if you need ideas this book is full of them! And they are really, really good! When I had my first child I scoured tons of books for activity ideas, if only I had had "Play & Learn". I'm floored by the number of projects in here (200+) and the fact that they all have a developmental/educational tie-in. I also love the sweet illustrations and the way the book is organized. If you are parent to a toddler or run a preschool program, this book will become your go-to resource for how to keep the kids engaged and having fun while they learn.

I gave this to a daughter-in-law at Christmas who had it on her wish list to use with her 3 year old. Here is what she said:Oh my goodness, I LOVE it! I have used it serveral times. In fact, we did one just this week. My goal is to incorporate 1-2 a week. (That cotton ball craft Audrey made you was one as well)The only drawback is I’ve found it requires some materials that I don’t readily have on hand.It’s nice because it just helps give me an idea when I’m searching for an activity to do and it’s broken down into separate categories of play/learning. Pretend/explore/create, etc.

I was hoping for ideas with typical household materials, but these require WAY too much preparation. I haven't used this at all with my 18 month old. Maybe when I'm out of work I'll find the time.

So fun ! I love the ideas, and it gives us something to look forward to each day !

Part 1 considers diagnostic techniques, with chapters on the approach to a gastrointestinal case, laboratory evaluation, imaging, endoscopy, immunology and biopsy. The completely new chapter on imaging of the gastrointestinal tract, liver and pancreas covers in detail the modalities most frequently employed in small animal practice, namely radiography and ultrasonography, whilst also briefly discussing more advanced techniques of Doppler and harmonic ultrasonography, scintigraphy, CR and MRI. The short chapters in Part 2 provide a practical approach to investigating presenting complaints: dysphagia and regurgitation; vomiting; acute and chronic diarrhoea; malabsorption; GI haemorrhage; dyschezia and tenesmus; jaundice; hepatic encephalopathy and infectious diseases. All follow the same basic format: outlining the clinical features, ranking the differential diagnoses in order of importance, and providing step-by-step algorithms for diagnosis. The more traditional organ-based systems approach in Part 3 has been expanded from the previous edition to include chapters on disorders of the oral cavity, perineum and anus, and biliary system. Each chapter is presented in a similar style, starting with a brief description of relevant anatomy and physiology, then detailing diagnostic tests, and concluding with a discussion of the disorders that can be encountered, including their treatment. A career diplomat for Portugal, Sousa Mendes was brought up in an aristocratic and pious Roman Catholic family. It is worth struggling through this stilted translation of the less-relevant first part of his life to learn about the heroic conviction he developed at the age of 55 to defy his superiors in order to save the lives of refugees from Nazism. In 1939 refugees flooded France, trying to obtain visas to Portugal, a neutral country during WWII. Portugal's prime minister, who did not want to alienate Hitler, issued "Circular 14," which effectively prohibited Portuguese consuls from fulfilling a "centuries-old tradition of hospitality" and, in explicitly excluding Jews, "officially introduced a hitherto unknown element of racial or religious segregation into the question of immigration." Finding this policy utterly unconscionable, Sousa Mendes, Portugal's consul general in France's temporary capital of Bordeaux, issued several passports to those fleeing France, and then, overwhelmed by the situation, took to his bed for three days. When he got up, he told his wife (who supported his actions) and children that God had instructed him to obey his conscience. Sousa Mendes set up a virtual assembly line and signed visas for the hordes of refugees who soon swamped his office and residence. He was eventually dismissed from the foreign service without a pension and died in poverty in 1954. Posthumously honored by Israel, he without doubt saved the lives of ten thousand Jews. A Parisian journalist for Le Monde, Fralon tells the story of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Portuguese consul to France who saved thousands of Jewish lives during World War II. The book begins with Mendes's childhood, family, and career. In addition, we learn about Portugal's "neutral" policy of the time. In spite of this policy, Mendes continually assisted refugees with food and shelter but most importantly by signing thousands of visas so that they could leave the country, saving many Jews from the concentration camps. Mendes was then forced to retire, living for years in poverty. It was not until the 1980s and 1990s that his actions were officially recognized as heroic by Portugal. Mendes was not the only man to assist refugees with visas, but he is part of a small, courageous group that includes Sweden's Raoul Wallenberg and American Varian Fry. This book is written in accessible language and provides a memorable account of a man who stood up for what he thought was right. Recommended for Holocaust and World War II collections. The biography of Aristide Mendes Souza is an important one for the whole world to know. He is not the only person to have defied his country and thwarted Nazi intentions, but his heroism brought him and his family terrible damage. Under the dictator Salazar Mendes Souza's tragedy went beyond the Second World War and continued deep into the second half of the 20th Century. Having saved the lives of 30,000 individuals, including 10,000 Jews, Israel names him a Righteous Man among the Nations and Portugal and the United States honored him in many ways. The book is a praiseworthy addition to the honors which the Portuguese consul in Bordeaux received. A great many sources were tapped, among them previous writings by others, interviews andofficial government documents. A very interesting text.

Dr. Aristides de Sousa Mendes (1885-1954) who served as Consul General of Portugal in San Francisco, CA from 1921 to 1924, risked everything -- his career, his family, his reputation, his savings, everything -- to save over 30,000 World War II refugees fleeing Nazi-occupied territories, 10,000 of whom Jewish, by providing Portuguese visas as Consul General of Portugal in Bordeaux, France. He, himself a Catholic, said "I would rather stand with God against man, than with man against God." Virtually unknown even among the Portuguese until fairly recently, he was selected in 2007 as the third Greatest Portuguese of all time. Three of his 14 children, Carlos (1922-1999), Sebastian (1923-2006), and John Paul Abranches (1932-2009) lived and died in the U.S.José Alain Fralon, a journalist for Le Monde in Paris, describes Dr. Sousa Mendes' life especially from the 1930's in Belgium and France to his death in Lisbon in 1954. An excellent and quick read that encourages further reading on this war hero.

My father was a beneficiary of one of the visas granted by this great man in June of 1940, allowing him and his family to travel across Spain to Portugal and eventually, to safety in the United States.I bought this book for him for his 78th birthday, and he told me it was an enjoyable read.

A little known book, but a very interesting addition to WW2.

Sad story of an unlikable aristocrat who saved thousands from the Nazis but died in poverty as a result. Too bad this reads like a plea from his relatives for his back pay owed by the government.

As the previous reviewer from Portugal noted, humanity sometimes fails to acknowledge people who do the right thing. Sousa Mendes was just such a man. He was a Portuguese Council in southern France at the time of the German invasion. Jews from the low countries and France fled south trying to get to the neutral countries of Spain and Portugal. These countries sealed their borders in most cases, so one had to have a visa to get across the border. Sousa Mendes violated his country's rule aginst these stateless persons, and literally issued thousands of visas so that these Jews and other opponents of the Nazis could escape. In the process, he destroyed his career and eventually died in poverty. He did do the proper thing where most others abided their country's rules.This was an inspirational read. Fralon details the life of Sousa Mendes and Portugal's role in both World Wars. He also details a little of the fascist rule of Salzaar. Unfortunately there were no happy endings with Sousa Mendes. The Portuguese government even balked at honoring him, and was forced by outside pressure to recognize what he did in the nineties.

Aristides de Sousa Mendes saved ten thousand during the holocaust and paid a high cost for his ethical actions. This acounting should be more widely known--as should this hero's name. The individual stories make it even more compelling.

This is a naive and biased book trying to glorify the "myth" of Sousa Mendes that allegedly saved 30 thousand lives in 1940. A recent study by the Yad Vashem historian Avraham Milgra published by the Shoah Resource Center, International School for Holocaust Studies, says that the 30,000 figure are highly exaggerated. What is puzzling about the book is the candidness in which it also reveals that Sousa Mendes career is a thirty year track record of indiscipline, abuse of public money, accusations of extortions, and reprimands. Sousa Mendes was never ill-treated. He kept on being paid his full Consul salary until he died in 1954. The only thing that Sousa Mendes did was, in the middle a panic crisis when eight to ten million French took to the roads and railways to escape the German armies, Sousa Mendes, caught in the middle of the uncontrolled panic, had a nervous breakdown and granted a few hundred visas without asking questions. He never put his life at risk he just jeopardized portuguese neutrality in the war and put at risk the lives of millions. In my view the myth was created by those trying to make money while surfing the wave of commotion rose by the holocaust and also by Portuguese politicians that want to use the story to attack Salazar. But if you want to learn many hiden facts about Sousa Mendes and the myth, then this is a good book.
