A career diplomat for Portugal, Sousa Mendes was brought up in an aristocratic and pious Roman Catholic family. It is worth struggling through this stilted translation of the less-relevant first part of his life to learn about the heroic conviction he developed at the age of 55 to defy his superiors in order to save the lives of refugees from Nazism. In 1939 refugees flooded France, trying to obtain visas to Portugal, a neutral country during WWII. Portugal's prime minister, who did not want to alienate Hitler, issued "Circular 14," which effectively prohibited Portuguese consuls from fulfilling a "centuries-old tradition of hospitality" and, in explicitly excluding Jews, "officially introduced a hitherto unknown element of racial or religious segregation into the question of immigration." Finding this policy utterly unconscionable, Sousa Mendes, Portugal's consul general in France's temporary capital of Bordeaux, issued several passports to those fleeing France, and then, overwhelmed by the situation, took to his bed for three days. When he got up, he told his wife (who supported his actions) and children that God had instructed him to obey his conscience. Sousa Mendes set up a virtual assembly line and signed visas for the hordes of refugees who soon swamped his office and residence. He was eventually dismissed from the foreign service without a pension and died in poverty in 1954. Posthumously honored by Israel, he without doubt saved the lives of ten thousand Jews. A Parisian journalist for Le Monde, Fralon tells the story of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Portuguese consul to France who saved thousands of Jewish lives during World War II. The book begins with Mendes's childhood, family, and career. In addition, we learn about Portugal's "neutral" policy of the time. In spite of this policy, Mendes continually assisted refugees with food and shelter but most importantly by signing thousands of visas so that they could leave the country, saving many Jews from the concentration camps. Mendes was then forced to retire, living for years in poverty. It was not until the 1980s and 1990s that his actions were officially recognized as heroic by Portugal. Mendes was not the only man to assist refugees with visas, but he is part of a small, courageous group that includes Sweden's Raoul Wallenberg and American Varian Fry. This book is written in accessible language and provides a memorable account of a man who stood up for what he thought was right. Recommended for Holocaust and World War II collections. The biography of Aristide Mendes Souza is an important one for the whole world to know. He is not the only person to have defied his country and thwarted Nazi intentions, but his heroism brought him and his family terrible damage. Under the dictator Salazar Mendes Souza's tragedy went beyond the Second World War and continued deep into the second half of the 20th Century. Having saved the lives of 30,000 individuals, including 10,000 Jews, Israel names him a Righteous Man among the Nations and Portugal and the United States honored him in many ways. The book is a praiseworthy addition to the honors which the Portuguese consul in Bordeaux received. A great many sources were tapped, among them previous writings by others, interviews andofficial government documents. A very interesting text.

Dr. Aristides de Sousa Mendes (1885-1954) who served as Consul General of Portugal in San Francisco, CA from 1921 to 1924, risked everything -- his career, his family, his reputation, his savings, everything -- to save over 30,000 World War II refugees fleeing Nazi-occupied territories, 10,000 of whom Jewish, by providing Portuguese visas as Consul General of Portugal in Bordeaux, France. He, himself a Catholic, said "I would rather stand with God against man, than with man against God." Virtually unknown even among the Portuguese until fairly recently, he was selected in 2007 as the third Greatest Portuguese of all time. Three of his 14 children, Carlos (1922-1999), Sebastian (1923-2006), and John Paul Abranches (1932-2009) lived and died in the U.S.José Alain Fralon, a journalist for Le Monde in Paris, describes Dr. Sousa Mendes' life especially from the 1930's in Belgium and France to his death in Lisbon in 1954. An excellent and quick read that encourages further reading on this war hero.

My father was a beneficiary of one of the visas granted by this great man in June of 1940, allowing him and his family to travel across Spain to Portugal and eventually, to safety in the United States.I bought this book for him for his 78th birthday, and he told me it was an enjoyable read.

A little known book, but a very interesting addition to WW2.

Sad story of an unlikable aristocrat who saved thousands from the Nazis but died in poverty as a result. Too bad this reads like a plea from his relatives for his back pay owed by the government.

As the previous reviewer from Portugal noted, humanity sometimes fails to acknowledge people who do the right thing. Sousa Mendes was just such a man. He was a Portuguese Council in southern France at the time of the German invasion. Jews from the low countries and France fled south trying to get to the neutral countries of Spain and Portugal. These countries sealed their borders in most cases, so one had to have a visa to get across the border. Sousa Mendes violated his country's rule aginst these stateless persons, and literally issued thousands of visas so that these Jews and other opponents of the Nazis could escape. In the process, he destroyed his career and eventually died in poverty. He did do the proper thing where most others abided their country's rules.This was an inspirational read. Fralon details the life of Sousa Mendes and Portugal's role in both World Wars. He also details a little of the fascist rule of Salzaar. Unfortunately there were no happy endings with Sousa Mendes. The Portuguese government even balked at honoring him, and was forced by outside pressure to recognize what he did in the nineties.

Aristides de Sousa Mendes saved ten thousand during the holocaust and paid a high cost for his ethical actions. This acounting should be more widely known--as should this hero's name. The individual stories make it even more compelling.

This is a naive and biased book trying to glorify the "myth" of Sousa Mendes that allegedly saved 30 thousand lives in 1940. A recent study by the Yad Vashem historian Avraham Milgra published by the Shoah Resource Center, International School for Holocaust Studies, says that the 30,000 figure are highly exaggerated. What is puzzling about the book is the candidness in which it also reveals that Sousa Mendes career is a thirty year track record of indiscipline, abuse of public money, accusations of extortions, and reprimands. Sousa Mendes was never ill-treated. He kept on being paid his full Consul salary until he died in 1954. The only thing that Sousa Mendes did was, in the middle a panic crisis when eight to ten million French took to the roads and railways to escape the German armies, Sousa Mendes, caught in the middle of the uncontrolled panic, had a nervous breakdown and granted a few hundred visas without asking questions. He never put his life at risk he just jeopardized portuguese neutrality in the war and put at risk the lives of millions. In my view the myth was created by those trying to make money while surfing the wave of commotion rose by the holocaust and also by Portuguese politicians that want to use the story to attack Salazar. But if you want to learn many hiden facts about Sousa Mendes and the myth, then this is a good book.

Good addition to the Traveller universe with rules for Navy characters, and ship creation.

Awesome!

High Guard is a refreshingly familiar upgrade to the "old" books. I like the new presentation and depth of information and I think I will find this book even more heavily referenced than the original.

After a rather disappointing Mercenary book, I was pleasantly surprised by a masterful game supplement. The character generation rules for Navy characters are probably a little too hard (it is really hard to survive for long), but they are most certainly fun. Building a ship is fun. Massive starship combats are possible, though it's really a backdrop for smaller-scale action. The prose is no-nonsense, and the book is not exactly an enjoyable read, but it is packed. I can read something else for pleasure and pull what I need from this when I need it.Best of all, my book had some typos in it. So Mongoose is going to send me a new book, plus another rulebook to make up for the "inconvenience." I hope I can find some more Traveller books with typos! Great customer service.

While the initial version had some problems, Mongoose Publishing did the right thing and replaced the initial print run free of charge and threw in an extra book besides.There are some errors, but the errata does help to clear things up.Overall I would have to recommend this product.

I was afraid this would be too rudimentary. It starts off that way but it is a nice, straightforward approach. Not a lot of overly technical explanations but it does not gloss over any of the technical topics - they are just explained with normal shop talk. Anyone looking to make their own gears or learn a bit more about gears would probably benefit from this. Focuses a bit on the home shop type person and machines they would have access to when it comes to the 'how to make' section - ie dividing head on a mill or even a lathe. If you already know how to make gears, probably not worth it. Does not cover hobbing or shaping. Does cover bevel gears.

This is the most informative book on gear cutting that I have ever read. Even though the "Machinists' Handbook" covers gears in more precise mathematical detail, this book was written to educate the hobby or amateur machinist on how to both design and make several types of gears (spur, worm, bevel). The author educates the reader on gear theory, and then on how to make the gears on inexpensive hobby lathes/mills. In addition, he covers how to make gear cutters inexpensively, and use them to make the gears. The language he uses is simple and concise, yet he covers gear theory enough so that the reader has advanced knowledge of the fundamentals necessary to design thier own gears and gear trains.I have no negative criticism to offer of this book - it was exactly what I was looking for, and my money was well spent.

The text is accompanied buy clear, excellent photos and drawings.Mr Law takes a very complex subject and by starting at the basics, he builds upon each concept and clearly makes the geometry and execution of gears and gear cutting a subject that a complete novice like me can comprehend.As someone who is teaching himself the machining trade, I find this book invaluable.Thank you Mr Law for sharing your skills and knowledge with us!

Good information on manual processes to producing both gears and cutters to make them. Book does not cover helical gears, only Spur, worm and Bevel.

This book actually surprised me, it is literally brimming over with solid and detailed information. When opening the package I thought "Hmm, this looks pretty thin." But in that thin package is one of the most detailed yet easy to follow tutorials I have read. The text is practical, concise, and hands-on oriented. The first part of the text covers gear theory in a adult way, no over simplified grade school explanations, you won't feel like you're being talked down to. The same treatment is used for the gear cutting theory portion, and then practical portion about cutting and jig building. It has excellent pictures and diagrams, that add to the text instead of just being pretty to look at. Too often How-to books feel like wasted money to me. They provide little information that could not be read off of Wikipedia or a patched together tutorial. Or they are fluff and pictures with little "meat and potatos" information. Not this book. If you want to make your own gears, I am confident that this is the book for you. If I wanted to learn more on the subject, I would have to go to an advanced upper level college text, which this book has laid a stable foundation for doing if I need to go that route.

Like many of you, I got the book because I have a gear problem, and also I have nearly enough equipment and skills to fabricate a solution. This common feature would be difficult or impossible for vintage equipment, but trivial for (4th axis) CNC equipment available to even a budget oriented hobbyist.Second, the book shows a method or two for fabricating you own tools, to avoid high costs of procurement. Several internet blogs have detailed more sophisticated approaches, rendering Law's approach "quaint". Also since the book was published, the cost of ready-made tools has dropped significantly and are widely available mail-order from China, et al.

If you want to know (and by know, I mean really understand at a fundamental level), how involute (modern) and cycloid (old clockwork) gears work and can be made, this is the book for you. It's pretty amazing how much technical data has been packed into this tiny book in a easily understood format. Highly recommended.

Be warned, though, that March and April are the dampest months of the year in the south and it can bucket down in the north. Summer has mixed virtues. July and August are much the hottest months of the year - if only slightly more so than in the southern parts of Italy or Greece - and the one time you really do need to lapse into a local way of life, for example resting through the midday hours at a cafŽ or taking a siesta at your hotel. Obviously this goes above all for the deep south and the ksour (see Chapter Nine). On the more exposed beaches of the north coast, midsummer is actually a pull - some of them are only warm enough for swimming from around May until October. If you wait until autumn, you get the best of both worlds, with warm swimming and few crowds, even at the big resorts. In winter, the north and the Tell can get distinctly cold; A•n Draham, the highest mountain town, commonly has a metre of snow, and in 1985 it even snowed at Bizerte on the Mediterranean coast. Tunis, Cap Bon and Sousse are not so much cold in winter as dull, with sporadic rains. But this is an ideal time for covering the ancient sites at leisure and then migrating south to Jerba's beaches and the Sahara.

The current Rough Guide (8th ed., March 2009) is better in every way than the current edition of Lonely Planet Tunisia (4th ed., April 2007), covering more and in greater detail. A glance at the accommodations section for Tunis shows 32 hotels and hostels reviewed by Rough Guide, compared to the 14 in Lonely Planet. The best hotel we found in Jerba, Hotel Arischa, comes recommended by Rough Guide, and is not even listed in Lonely Planet. Prices have increased significantly since LP was researched, and you will find generally more accurate information in RG.That's not to say the current LP isn't useful, and I'm still a big fan of their books. With so little travel information available in English, I'd recommend just getting both books and cross-referencing. But this should without a doubt be your primary resource.

This is one of the most comprehensive country guides I have encountered in over 20 years of travel in less developed countries. The author(s) give an amazing variety of background information. Even though the guide is several years old, most of the information seemed current (aside from prices of museums, which have increased about 50-75%).

The only downside to this book is some things were out of date. Other than that I wouldn't travel to Tunisia with out it.

The Rough Guide was pretty good, even though it wasn't the latest edition. The delivery time of the item was as expected.

If you're bound for Tunisia, you won't want to leave without this book. I'm one of those people who thinks there is never any *one* guide that's ideal for a destination -- I always take 2 good guides. And, for Tunisia, the Rough Guide is definitely the first of the two.It is much, much more comprehensive than any other guide. The Blue Guide (my other choice for Tunisian visits), Lonely Planet Guide (also excellent though with less background), and others literally do not have 1/2 the content of the Rough Guide.By supplementing this book with one other one (the Blue Guide for in-depth history & cultural information, or the Lonely Planet Guide for a smaller, hipper subset of travel tips) you'll have a great Tunisian stay. Whichever "other" guide you choose, you'll want this one for the COMPLETE story of any destination in any corner of Tunisia.Whether you're basking on the corniche at Hammamet, Bizerte, or la Marsa; travelling to tourist meccas like the Tunis Medina, Carthage, Sfax, Jerba, el Djem, Matmata and the Sahara palmeries; or taking jaunts to more out-of-the-way spots like Kerkouane or Tabarka... Take this book.

This book surprised me. I'm a nurse in the U.S. and from what I've read in this book, I don't know why we don't use more and more eastern medicine. I can't wait to learn more about it, this book was a great beginner book for someone interested in eastern medicine. I can't wait to learn more. Great book. I got it in Kindke edition, but will also be ordering the regular book also bc of the great recipes at the back of book, reference to herbal formulas, and just overall note taking/highlights of the book. YES there is that much good stuff in here, wonderful beginning to learning more!

Interesting reading. We should have the west and east work together for health care. Also the Chinese should add certain western herbs to their many herbs that they don't have such as Maca root from South America for even more herbs. The west has to be open minded about something from the east, it has been used for thousands of years.

A most detailed description of Chinese medicine. Thorough and understandable. It is a reference to be delved into from time to time not a "page turner" as a novel would be. My husband & I have found it very useful if somewhat detailed for our everyday use. Recommended for reference purposes and if you are a student of Chinese medicine.

One of the best books I have read in many years. Not only well written with excellent sourcing and index, it is a clear presentation of the powerful and affective impact of Acupuncture. Read, find a qualified practitioner and become an active participant in your own well being.

Their politics are not reflected in book...........

Written more for a physician or medical student. It is and was very hard for me to read and understand. Perhaps if I had a better breath of Chinese medicine it would seem easier. I was hoping for a beginner's guide on chinese medicince.This was over my head as a beginner, but I'm sure perfect for someone with more Chinese medicine background.
