First off, I think it's customary to mention the fact that you received this as a review copy. So - I thought I received this as a review copy but, on checking back, it seems I paid for it. The say the memory's the first to go.Anyhow, I read it thinking it was a free review copy and I'll review it that way.This is NOT the 1950's you've seen on TV. I mean, it's all there - the rock and roll that the kids love so much, big cars with big motors, returned vets building, buying and making babies.But it's a little rotten underneath. Domestic violence was the first (and the highest creep factor for me) evidence that things aren't quite right. But wait, there's more. Lovecraftian monsters, mass murderers, water spirits, (oh, my!) are thick on the ground in this short story collection. There's very few happy endings here folks and no feel-good-about-the-world messages. This nightmare's one of the ugly ones that you don't wake from to find you're not really falling - you wake up from these after you land.The stories in it are well written, well presented and entertaining. I'll be adding these authors to my check `em out list and looking forward to more from them.
This stellar collection of stories from editor/publisher/writer/artist extraordinaire George Cotronis isn't so much an exercise in nostalgia for a particularly glorified era as it is a tribute to timeless literary craftsmanship. Most (probably all, I'd venture to guess) of the 14 authors assembled here were born long after the assassination of JFK, generally considered the true psychic divide between those politically polarized decades, but you'd never know it. Though their references must all come from popular media (i.e. movies & TV shows) either made during or set in the pivotal postwar period, when our society was grappling with its own cultural demons (racism, sexism, xenophobia, etc - pretty much the same as nowadays), the ambient details all ring true. The atmosphere is consistently, collectively, richly evocative, linking the disparate stories into a single impressionistic mosaic where every individual piece is integral to the overall effect. However, every story, equally polished and compelling, boasts its own distinctive voice and vision. It's impossible to single out any as standouts since they all unique and praiseworthy, but T. Fox Dunham's "The Two Monsters of Levittown," which creatively deals with the lingering horrific legacy of Nazi Germany mirroring this country's own shameful past, and Max Booth's "All the Beautiful Marilyns" which is almost too creepily bizarre to adequately describe (sort of like David Lynch directing "Carnival of Souls") resonate in my retro-centric brain. Each author is worthy of special mention, so I will: Rachel Anding, Dino Parenti, Raymond Little, Adrean Messmer, Madeleine Swann, M.P. Johnson, Chris Thorndycroft, Neal F. Litherland, Mark W. Coulter, Ian Welke, W.P. Johnson, and Tim Marquitz. All provide poetic pulp of the highest order. Aliens, monsters, serial killers, juvenile delinquents, bigots and sexpots are on vivid, visceral display throughout, making this collection both comprehensive and essential for fans of the genre, the era, and just plain great storytelling.
Welcome to the humble 50’s kiddos. Grab a blender and mix in some Stand By Me and The Sandlot movie nostalgia, mix in some Bradbury-honeycoated memories and prose, and spike with Lovecraftian beasties. Pour in a glass, and slam it down for a wild ride through the shadowy corners of drive-Ins, dusty diners and that abandoned house with the crooked white picket fence.After finishing the first two stories, I had to pause to see if maybe this whole collection was created by a prompt in which the stories had to contain a drunken father figure and Mickey Mantle references. And then one even brought back a line from the movie Stand by Me. But by the time I was done with In the Blood, I was willing to give this collection a shot.The creepiness spews out with stories about serial killers, small town dark secrets, meteors from beyond, girl crushes, sex-kittens, and pears Ride on and cheer a beautiful father and son story, get lost in the hazy vengeful shades of Halloween, and it wouldn’t be the 50’s Horror without a Nazi Mad Scientist!Get that Bradbury feeling as you visit a Drive-In, get a taste of Hollyweird, and bow-down to the seed spreading king. A diner dulling out dark coffee and dark visitors (check please)! Topped by cruising for the chick and getting more than what you would expect.Really great bundle of short stories, with just a few issues (first two stories, very similar), And a Coors Light/ TV remote reference that zapped me outta the way back machine for a few.The writing is tight. Some of the stories are so short and sweet that they flash by…but you will finish this collection with a smile. I am surprised this has remained such a hidden gem. I would gladly buy American Nightmare ll, if it was ever produced.
