GENRE: RomanceTHEME: Mob, Contemporary, MatureRECEIVED: BoughtBLOG:[...]REVIEW:I’m easing my way back into a good reading cycle and wanted to start off with a bang. I was recommended Crow by a fellow reader and was sucked in immediately to this hard-core mafia world. I loved Zavarelli’s writing style and the great character development between the two very different leads.Crow follows Mack, who is on the search for her missing friend. When the police and PI’s cant help her, she decides to take the task into her own hands. Meaning risking her life too infiltrate the Irish mafia. Mack catches the eye of one of the leaders, Lachlan, who is mean and hard-core to the bone. Mack doesn’t know what she’s in for when she starts working in this new world, but she’ll do anything to find her friend. Even more of a surprise, is that she’s not prepared to fall for Lachlan, whom she doesn’t even know if she can trust. But with everyone having secrets, there is know way to tell who is telling the truth and who is going to stab someone in the back.Mack is the definition of “bad-ass woman”, she is a fighter, like her father was. But also she doesn’t back down when face with the possibly she’s going to die. Her connection to Lachlan is intense, they of course don’t get along at first, but the tension is insane and I couldn’t wait for these two to hit it off. She also develops a soft spot for one of her fellow co-workers that she ends up becoming great friends with. I liked how she had her back and wanted to protect her from some real scary jerks.Lachlan, oh this man is hard to describe…but I fell hard for this bad boy. He oozes sexy, dark and dangerous. He is the possible next in line to take over the Irish Mafia, and now that Mack has appeared, she a distraction he doesn’t need but defiantly wants. Lachlan changes a bit, but he’s still continues to be the hard-core criminal just opens up to Mack and pretty much will take down anyone who looks at her wrong.Overall, I loved the romance; I needed something like this story to get me back into the reading mode. Both characters are very flawed in the best of ways and don’t care that there is going to be many challenges for them ahead. There is violence, so don’t get me wrong, but its not to the extreme where it will make you not want to read it. This is only the first book in the series and I love how the story concludes but we will find out how they progress in the future books.

I'm pretty infamous for disliking mafia romances because the vast majority of them tend to be so stupid and so badly-written. Seriously, they're second only to MC romances in terms of my least favorite sub-genre of romance novel. Don't @ me.But several of my very trusted friends were raving about the Boston Underworld series, and being Irish myself, I couldn't help but be intrigued because Irish dudes are super hot.CROW does not start off well at all, though. I liked Mackenzie's POV a lot because she's a female boxer seeking revenge and who doesn't like that? But Lachlan's POV at first was just non-stop, "Ooh, I'm such a bad boy, look at me and my fancy weapons and all these swear words I know how to use!" and I started having flashbacks to SPARROW, and thinking, "Oh lord, spare me from vain psychos in books named after birds!"But by the middle of the book, everything smoothed out and I couldn't put the book down. Of course, it helps that the heroine is as far from TSTL as humanly possible. She is determined to get her revenge and is willing to do anything to get it - wink, wink. There were hot sex scenes, intense action scenes, Mackenzie saving herself, Lachlan acting like a genuine BAMF and not just a facsimile of one, and oh, yes, tons of alpha male action done right. I'll have what she's having, thanks! The flaws to this story are, of course, the pacing issues (that beginning needs to be ironed out), a number of typos, some odd stylistic choices (why is the beginning paragraph of each chapter in, like, size 32 font? Nope, nope, nope), and the fact that both of these characters appear to have a MAJOR latex allergy because there wasn't a single condom in sight for any of that hot sexing.Still, I ended up having a lot of fun with CROW and look forward to reading the sequel.3.5 out of 5 stars

The book:• 314 Pages • Contemporary • Multicultural • Standalone • Happily Ever After • In A Series • First-Person Narrative • Her POV • His POVThe romantic theme:• Enemies To Lovers • Boss - Employee Romance • Fighter Romance • Mafia Romance • Outlaw RomanceThe read:• Intense Read • Dark Read • Page Turner • Made Me Smile • Made Me Laugh • Touching • Twists & Turns • Sexy • ProvocativeHeat level:• 3 / 5 (Includes hot and explicit sex scenes, but not too often through out the book) • MF scenes • Dirty Talk • Vanilla SexStory ingredients:• Witty Banter • Unforgettable First Meeting • Heroic Rescue • Big Romantic Gestures • Big Secret • Action • Mystery & Suspense • Violence • Sexual Abuse • KidnappingHe is...• Alpha Male • Bossy • Possessive • Emotionally Unavailable • Hot • Fit • Wealthy • OutlawShe is...• Stunning • Sassy • Strong • Unconventional • Fit • Virgin • Troubled Past • Dancer • MMA Fighter

ACTUAL RATING: 4.5 STARSI have been in a bit of a reading slump lately- just could not find anything to grab my attention for longer than the first few pages or chapter. That is... until Crow came along.I'm so happy to have finally finished a book lol. Loved it! Well-written and just the right mixture of elements to keep me interested so that I could blaze through the story. I love sassy characters, and Mackenzie is a spitfire- loved her character. If the F-bomb is offensive, then I wouldn't suggest reading this book hahaha. Mack sets out to find out what happened to her best friend by going undercover as a dancer at the club, but finds herself drawn to someone she'd least expect- & the steam rises between Mack (Butterfly) and Lachlan. This is my first book by this author, but I'm on board and eager to read more. Next...

My son was struggling with 2 other phonics programs but has really excelled now due to the amazing simplicity of this book. I love it! I included a few pics of the pages because I think it helps to see a little before you buy.

My son was having difficulties reading and I went through "100 Lessons to Teach Your Child How to Read" which worked to some extent. He didn't start excelling until I bought this book. I have noticed a huge difference. I really like the added games and the ease of using this book. The other book we use to use had so many instructions to read. This book just flows a lot nicer.

My son and I have been using this book for the current academic school year and we both really like it. His reading has soared over the year and it's been amazing to watch. I like that this book is self-paced. Meaning we can choose to do as much or as little as we want in one sitting. It's divided by topics, not by chapters or lessons. My son loves the funny little sayings and quotes. I also find the font to be very pleasing to the eyes.

I used the book 100 Easy Lessons to initially teach my son to read and he loved it and was very successful with it. It kept him interested, because it presented fun little stories with the learning concepts. The thing I don't love about that book is it doesn't teach long vowels, digraphs and blends, although it does give you ideas at the end of the book for teaching those things yourself. I did some research to see what I could use to teach him those things and read a review someone left on-line, about ordering this book as a follow up and starting around page 50, which is what we did. My son is learning a lot and it is helpful in teaching him long vowels and the other things 100 easy lessons doesnt teach, but oh so boring. It's boring for me and its super boring for him. We could handle it at fist but my son is slowly starting to dread it. The book is just page after page of reciting words (that mostly don't make sense together) and then having a little "spelling test" at the end of each page. I do feel like he has become a better reader because of this book I just wish it wasn't so monotonous. If you have a hesitant reader, I would either take it really slow in this book or find something a little more captivating.

This has been the best investment I have ever made in my life. I started this program with my oldest son 3 years ago when he was 3. He is now 6 and has just completed Kindergarten. We homeschool and have used this as his main reading program. He is an excellent reader. I receive comments about how amazing of a reader he is at least weekly. Again he just turned 6 and he is reading at a solid 4th grade level. We haven't completely finished the book even, we have about 30 pages left. He can decode new words with relative ease, including multi-syllable words. We have worked through the book consistently but without rushing. When he had difficulty with a page we would do a smaller portion. Occasionally we have needed to review some previous concepts, we just go back to the relevant page(s) and refresh. He now loves reading and can read almost anything that catches his eye. When he was young we would do fairly small segments and any time we could act out a word, we would. Words like, log, lad, nap, mop, hop, etc. He hasn't loved every day we've done it, but on the days it's particularly grueling, we just needed to incorporate some extra fun or motivation. I did things like, motivating treats (raisins or small candies), acting out the words, say a line then race across the room and back, etc. I also let him read while standing which helped him focus and enjoy it more.My only, and very minor at that, complaint is with Dewey, the bookworm. He is incredibly cute, and has some excellent sayings... but they aren't attuned to the reading level of the child, or to the comprehension level of the child. It would be more effective if the kids had a chance at reading his sayings before they were about halfway through the book. It would also be less frustrating if I didn't have to take a half hour to explain some of them because of how they are worded or how abstract they are.All in all, a phenomenal phonics program.

I absolutely adore this book! My daughter learned to read in public kinder but wasn't confident and struggled with sounding out. Now she is understanding different sounds of each letter and when to use the different sounds and combinations of letters. I'm even understanding phonics better! I get so excited to see her use this book and learn. I'm so happy to see her confidence growing as well as her love for reading and writing!

My son did one year in public school and was one of those kids who was doing just well enough to not get any extra attention, but was not being pushed to his full potential. We started homeschooling this year and after a lot of research, I decided to go with this program (and also Reading Pathways, which I also highly recommend). We've only been doing the program for 2 1/2 weeks and he has already progressed more in this short time than he did the entire year last year. He LOVES the games that are included and is now picking up books independently. I am extremely grateful to Ms. Hiskes for creating this product!

This book has been a tremendous addition and supplement for my Kindergartener. We finished "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" and really needed something to fill in the gaps. This is the book!I especially love the word lists provided. It has given me a solid focus on words and tips essential to my daughter's reading, writing and spelling success.

This is the memoir of Bella Dodds. Ms. Dodds was a union organizer and lawyer, who became active active in the Communist Party in New York City between 1920 and 1949. She eventually became a member of the national committee of the Communist Party, where she observed the hypocrisy, hatred and malice that made up Communism. She was expelled in 1949 and returned to the Catholic Church. If the devil's greatest trick has been to make the world believe that he doesn't exist, the Communists are not far behind. Today, Communists are presented as loveable goofballs, who didn't threaten anyone, except where they are presented as being a non-existent bogeyman. If you read Bella's memoirs, you will be amazed at the extent of Communist power and infiltration into, at least, New York politics. Communists had wealth supporters and its own financial agents and operated their own night clubs. They had politicians who were their mouthpieces in state and federal government and in New York they were often able to swing the vote so as to decide who would be elected. Bella casually mentions the murder of a Republican precinct captain who stood in the way of a Communist election victory, and how that murder was never solved. If you read this memoir, you will be disabused of the myths about Communism: Communism was real, it was a was a tightly knit conspiracy, it was corrupt and corrupting and it murdered people and wrecked lives. This memoir works on two levels. On one level it is an insider's account of the Communist Party during its heydays, in the decade before and after the Great Depression. Bella explains how she became involved in Communism. Although she makes the traditional nod toward her desire to help the poor, we actually see how she is influenced by her teachers who presented Communism as synonymous with "progress":."In the days that have gone since we enunciated these statements so confidently I have had many occasions to see that this cataloging of people as either “right” or “left” has led to more confusion in American life than perhaps any other false concept. It sounds so simple and so right. By using this schematic device one puts the communists on the left and then one regards them as advanced liberals -after which it is easy to regard them as the enzyme necessary for progress".And:"More and more I wanted to talk and act only in terms of the future, of a future that would have none of the corruption of the present. It depressed me that people close to me could accommodate themselves to such a present. Only people I did not know, the great mass of unknown human beings, began to awaken in me a poignant sense of kinship. In fact, I began to transfer my personal feelings to this wholly unknown defeated mass. And so it came about that I began to seek my spiritual home among the dispossessed of the earth."One of the interesting features about reading this book is how many of Bella's teachers and fellow communists were women. Although we are led to believe these days that women were kept out of education and tee professions, Bella casually mentions how she went to law school in New York of the late 1920s. She certainly doesn't discuss fighting against glass walls and sexism, albeit, without a doubt women were underrepresented in law and education, but apparently not so much that she was touting herself as either the "first" or the "only."It seems that education was a significant factor in radicalizing young men and women, even in the 1920s:"Nationalism.” I studied closely A. A. Berle and Gardiner Means who wrote of the two hundred corporations that controlled America at the end of World War I. I read widely on imperialism and began to be critical of the role my country was playing. I discovered the John Dewey Society and the Progressive Education Association. I became aware of the popular concept of the social frontier. I also repeated glibly that we had reached the last of our natural frontiers and that the new ones to be sought must be social. There would be, we were told, in the near future a collective society in our world and especially in our country, and in teaching students one must prepare them for that day.As a result of that year’s study of American history and national politics, as well as in the direct experience of my students and myself in local politics, I now began to tear apart before my students many respected public groups - charity, church, and other organizations - that were trying to better conditions in old-fashioned ways."This leads to another great part of this book; it shows how our present is a product of our past. Listen to these excerpts and ask if they do not resemble the culture that has developed in college campuses by the year 2016:Hatred of America:"Again we were to despise our own country as an exploiter of the workers."Opportunistic use of civil liberties:"When a person conditioned by a totalitarian group talks about the right not to incriminate himself, he really means the right not to incriminate the communist group of which he is only a nerve end. When he talks of freedom of speech, he means freedom for the communist group to speak as a group through the mouth of the individual who has been selected by the higher intelligence"Repeatedly refashioning historical understanding based on the current political fashion:"Before 1935, for instance, the Party had preached hatred of John L. Lewis as a labor dictator. No stories about him were too vile. He was accused of murder and pillage in his march to power in the Miners Union. Suddenly, in 1936, Lewis became the hero of the Communist Party. Again in 1940, when the Party decided to support Roosevelt against Willkie, and John L. Lewis risked his leadership in the CIO by calling on the unions to vote for Willkie, the Communists screamed invective, and in private meetings Roy Hudson and William Z. Foster, in charge of labor for the Politburo, vilified Lewis. When the Communists shifted their support, Lewis was dropped as president of the CIO and Philip Murray was elected in his place."Group hate:"During my years in the Teachers Union I gradually got used to these bitter expressions of hate. And since hate begets hate, often those under attack also responded with hate. Hearing them, I began to take sides and in the end accepted the Party’s hates as my own."Opposed to the traditional family:"The bourgeois family as a social unit was to be made obsolete."Politically-motivated change of standards:"Before June 1941 it had been an “imperialist war” for the re-division of markets, a war which could have only reactionary results. But when the Soviet Union was attacked, the war was transformed into a “people’s war,” a “war of liberation.”The American Communist Party dropped all its campaigns of opposition. Its pacifist friends were again “Fascist reactionaries” and all its energy was employed in praise of France and England as great democracies. The fight against the Board of Higher Education had to be brought to an end because the Party regarded Mayor LaGuardia as a force in the pro-democratic war camp."Hatred of opponents:"Even more significant was the fact that I had made their hates my hates. This was what established me as a full-fledged Communist. In the long ago I had been unable to hate anyone; I suffered desperately when someone was mistreated; I was regarded as a peacemaker. Now, little by little, I had acquired a whole mass of people to hate: the groups and individuals who fought the Party. How it came about I cannot tell. All I know as I look back to that time is that my mind had responded to Marxist conditioning. For it is a fact, true and terrible, that the Party establishes such authority over its members that it can swing their emotions now for and now against the same person or issue. It claims such sovereignty even over conscience as to dictate when it shall hate."Bella experienced Communist-hate when she was expelled for insufficiently hating the deposed CPUSA president, Earl Browder:"I was dismissed. As I walked down the dingy steps my heart was heavy. The futility of my life overcame me. For twenty years I had worked with this Party, and now at the end I found myself with only a few shabby men and women, inconsequential Party functionaries, drained of all mercy, with no humanity in their eyes, with no good will of the kind that works justice. Had they been armed I know they would have pulled the trigger against me. I thought of the others who had been through this and of those who were still to go through this type of terror. I shivered at the thought of harsh, dehumanized people like these, filled with only the emotion of hate, robots of a system which was heralded as a new world. And I sorrowed for those who would be taken down the long road whose end I saw, now, was a dead end."Individual worth subsumed into group-ideology:"What I had failed to understand was that the security I felt in the Party was that of a group and that affection in that strange communist world is never a personal emotion. You were loved or hated on the basis of group acceptance, and emotions were stirred or dulled by propaganda. That propaganda was made by the powerful people at the top. That is why ordinary Communists get along well with their groups: they think and feel together and work toward a common goal."Deliberate attacks on the Catholic priesthood and history:"I was silent as we drove to Chevy Chase. All the canards against the Catholic Church which I had heard and tolerated, which even by my silence I had approved, were threatening the tiny flame of longing for faith within me. I thought of many things on that ride, of the word “fascist,” used over and over by the communist press in describing the role of the Church in the Spanish Civil War. I also thought of the word “Inquisition” so skillfully used on all occasions. Other terms came to me — reactionary, totalitarian, dogmatic, old-fashioned. For years they had been used to engender fear and hatred in people like me. A thousand fears assailed me. Would he insist that I talk to the FBI? Would he insist that I testify? Would he make me write articles? Would he see me at all? And then before my mind’s eye flashed the cover of a communist pamphlet on which was a communist extending a hand to a Catholic worker. The pamphlet was a reprint of a speech by the French Communist leader Thorez and it flattered the workers by not attacking their religion. It skillfully undermined the hierarchy in the pattern of the usual communist attempt to drive a wedge between the Catholic and his priest."Opportunistic accusations of racism:"Close friends of many, years' standing became deadly enemies overnight. Little cliques, based on the principle of mutual protection and advancement, sprang up everywhere. Some shouted slogans from Jacques Duclos. Some shouted down anyone who suggested logical discussion of problems. The mood, the emotions, were hysterically leftist with the most violent racist talk I ever heard."And:"But the communist leadership heard with delight that Bella Dodd had appeared as "attorney for a landlord." At last they had the excuse for getting me politically, the excuse for which they had been looking. Of course they could have simply expelled me but this would involve discussion of policies. They were looking for an excuse to expel me on charges that would besmirch my character, drive my friends away, and stop discussion instead of starting it. What better than to expel me for the crime of becoming a "hireling of the landlords"? They must have realized that such an argument would scarcely be cogent to outsiders. Even to many of the Party it was weak. They must add something really unforgivable to make me an outcast in the eyes of the simple people of the Party. They did this by spreading the story that in my court appearances I had made remarks against the Puerto Rican tenants, that I had slandered them, and showed myself a racist, almost a fascist. And last of all, a charge of anti-Negro, anti-Semitism, and anti-working class was thrown in for good measure."An attentive reader will appreciate why college campuses have become such a cesspool of political correctness and intimidation of those who step outside of group think through the artifice of faux-moral outrage.Bella also explains how Communists were so effective at infiltration of other organizations, a subject explored in Lewy's The Cause That Failed: Communism in American Political Life:"This use of fractions made the Communist Party effective in noncommunist groups. They went prepared, organized, trained, and disciplined with a program worked out in detail, and before other groups had a chance to think the Communists were winning advantages. They worked in every convention as an organized bloc. In other organized blocs the Communists had “sleepers,” assigned to protect Communist Party interests. These “sleepers” were active members in noncommunist blocs for the purpose of hamstringing and destroying the power of the opposition."What we also pick up from Bella's book is how Communism filled in a spiritual void in the life of Communists. The Party was their life, their friends, their purpose. Being excommunicated from the Party was a death sentence because it meant that an old life had been lost. Bella describes her life after her expulsion from the Party as "learning to unbecome a Communist." What is also interesting about her memoir is how she counterpoints her Communist life with her non-Communist life; in the latter, people were allowed to be human, and to not hate:"As he and the other men discussed various matters, I realized why these three talked so differently from the little groups I had been with at tables like this in the communist movement. Here there was no hatred and no fear. We talked of books and television and of communism too, and Father Keller referred to the latter as “the last stage of an ugly period.”A final point is this phenomenal image of mercy and conversion: "By what right, I thought, was I seeking the help of someone I had helped revile, even if only by my silence? How dared I come to a representative of that hierarchy? The screeching of the brakes brought me back to reality. We had arrived, and my friend was wishing me luck as I got out of the car. I rang the doorbell and was ushered into a small room. While I waited, the struggle within me began again. Had there been an easy exit I would have run out, but in the midst of my turmoil Monsignor Fulton Sheen walked into the room, his silver cross gleaming, a warm smile in his eyes. He held out his hand as he crossed the room. “Doctor, I’m glad you’ve come,” he said. His voice and his eyes had a welcome which I had not expected, and it caught me unaware."A final nice element of this book is that it puts "flesh on the bones" of the people who lived during this time and on the time itself. I have known of Sheen, but until reading this, I didn't really know him.

Bella Dodd (1904-1969), in this autobiography, records how her desire to help the poor led her to become a member of the Communist Party of America (CPUSA) in the 1930s and 1940s. As a Communist agent, her job was to encourage young radicals to enter Roman Catholic Seminaries (although her work in this area is not mentioned in the book). After her defection from the Communist Party in 1949, she became a vocal anti-communist. (Today, the word Communism is suppressed. Socialism is used instead.)The Communists sought a revolution, not a reformation. They went to the dissatisfied – primarily the labor unions – where they could easily convince the members that they were unjustly underpaid. The Teachers Union was a particularly good target because citizens greatly desire good schools for their children. Paying the teachers more was attractive to both the teachers and the citizens.51% of the way through the book: She didn’t realize at the time (1940’s) how important the teachers were for the communist movement. Those who taught fellow communists were key to the network of people and organizations. The Communist Party fought back against a New York investigation of the Party, using smearing, name-calling, and calumniating. The Party also searched through the background of each investigator, looking for points of attack. The Party advocated for more funds for public-school teachers, painting the opponents as religious and racial bigots. Liberals, trade unions, leftist national groups such as the Democrats, Progressives, and the Republicans joined with the Communists in the pro-teacher effort. Dodd’s deepest loyalty developed because of the Party’s support of the teachers. Her tireless efforts were rewarded by her getting ever-increasing responsibilities in the Communist Party. The order and certitude of the Communist Party offered stability in the time of chaos before WWII, attracting many to the Party. The American Communists followed the directions from the Communist International Party. It changed from anti-war in 1940 to pro-war when the U.S. became allied with the communist U.S.S.R.72%: When Browder, the head of the American Communist Party, sought unity among those of different languages, the Communist International Party turned against Browder. The International did not want unity. It wanted class warfare. It opposed U.S. nationalism. The communists sought to have U.S. citizens despise their own country as an exploiter of the workers. The American Communist Party capitulated. Browder was deposed. Other leaders apologized for drifting away from the Marx-Lenin-Stalin program. Those who did not apologize were expelled from the Party.76%: The communist leaders themselves did not come from the working class. They had gone from school graduation to Party. They sat in “little rooms planning revolutions and conniving for power.” At the Party’s 1945 Emergency Convention, called to put the Party back on the International’s program, “some shouted down anyone who suggested logical discussion of problems.” The Convention reasserted the Party’s “revolutionary task of establishing a Soviet America.”78%: Still following orders from Moscow, in 1945 Dodd organized the Congress of American Women, a combination of wealthy women and Party members, ostensibly as a movement for peace but really to control women. The Party saw women as vulnerable to emotional appeal.79%: Party control was tightened in 1945. Those dissenting from the Party line were expelled or intimidated. After making some suggestions and defending some of the people being expelled, Dodd herself was subjected to much intimidation. When she hinted at quitting, she was told that nobody gets out of the Party. “You die or you are thrown out.” She began to realize that the Party was not the champion of the poor and dispossessed, that its activities were conceived in duplicity and ended in betrayal. For example, the Party decided to foster an independent nation within the U.S. for the Negroes, not for the good of Negroes but to foster strife in the U.S.83%: As did all leaders, Dodd was worried about losing her position in the Party. The Party’s Secret Service in the U.S. tracked everyone. In 1945, the Party identified Dodd’s legal representation of a landlord as her point of defection. Dodd was thereafter shunned by all Party officials.82%: Anticipating that the Communist Party would soon be outlawed, the Party formed the Progressive Party for the 1948 presidential election. Henry Wallace was its hand-picked candidate. Although this new party claimed it was supported by farmers and laborers, only a few left-wing unions supported it. Most members came from either the Communists, women of wealth, or disillusioned middle-class professionals. Wallace was so obviously controlled by the Communists that he received only 2.4% of the votes nationwide.83%: Party growth was aided by major donations from the wealthy. Party power increased as members moved into important positions in both the Democrat and Republican parties.90%: Dodd began to see that the Communist Party engages in group-think. If you did not think as the group did, as dictated from the leaders, you were expelled . Dodd was officially expelled from the Party in 1949, losing all of her friends and the groups by which she had identified herself (89%). The expulsion announcement was carried by the Associated Press. With expulsion came hate mail and telephone calls as well as loss of clients and loss of referrals.92%: Although Dodd had stopped thinking about God long ago, the chance meeting of a Catholic couple from the distant past rekindled her interest. A chance attendance at Christmas Mass intensified this interest. The chance reading of Fr. Keller’s You Can Change the World inspired her (95%). Eventually, she took instructions from a famous Catholic priest and, in 1952, became Catholic, conditionally Baptized.Dodd recounts what she learned from her years of experience:1. People are loved or hated on the basis of group acceptance. (89%)2. Emotions are stirred or dulled by propaganda. (89%)3. Leaving group-thinking was difficult. (90%)4. The Party purges all literature from member’s homes except Party literature. (91%)5. The Communists fostered revolution, not reform.6. The Communists wanted class warfare, dividing the nation into self-interest groups.7. The Communist Party is not the poor-man’s party but a monolithic organization designed to control the common man. (91%)8. The Communist Party will use whatever means necessary to achieve its ends, including the use of weapons. (91%)9. Wealthy people will cooperate with the Communists if the cooperation increases their wealth.10. Communists do not attack Catholicism but undermine the hierarchy. (93%)11. Communists use the human desire to do good. (93%)12. Communists call for the “brotherhood of man” but do not see God as the Father (93%)13. The hope that the revolution and the destruction of lives would lead to a better world was fatally wrong.14. There can be no social regeneration without a personal regeneration, per Fr. Keller. (96%)15. The City of God is infinitely more life-giving than the defiant The City of Man (by Pierre Manent) (96%)16. Communism considers useless the art of reasoned thinking, as found, for example, in St. Thomas Aquinas. (97%)17. Communism considers useless history and fact and logic. (97%)18. Education will solve no problems if it does not include training of the will as well as the mind and if it is not based on a sound philosophy. (98%)19. Man’s condition cannot be improved by forcing him into the mold of materialism and despiritualizing him by catering only to that part of him which is of this earth. (98%)20. Man alone cannot create a heaven on earth. (98%)21. Communism cannot be fought in a negative manner. Its false doctrine must be fought with Truth. (98%)22. Social and civic harmony have existed in the U.S. for years. Class warfare is contrived. (98%)23. Soldiers returned from WWII and the Korean War determined to make their homes a citadel of moral values. (99%)24. Training of the mind is of little value to man himself or to society unless it is placed in the framework of eternal truths. The material and the spiritual must be united.25. Selfless love is needed. Men schooled in darkness are doomed to defeat.I can’t help but wonder what motivates the Communist leaders. It seems to be an overwhelming desire for power – and perhaps the luxurious lifestyle that power enables. Maybe the motivation is the fun of causing chaos. The way Dodd tells her story enables the reader to see how people can be led into evil organizations.

This is an authoritative historical record explaining the depth of penetration that Communism made into the fabric of our nation in the 1930's and 40's. We have all been conditioned to believe that no such thing has ever occurred and that no intelligent person should hold such a view; i.e., McCarthyism, conspiracy, etc. But Bella Dodd, the author, certainly knew otherwise. She was a high level Communist operative who was blinded by her idealism to help the oppressed and then, only later, was shocked to be confronted by the lethal behavior and the morality-free nature of the real Communist. If anyone has ever wondered how our nation, and especially our educational system, was so quickly changed to a socialist one over the last 30 years, this wonderful book will explain in detail how the elaborate groundwork for this change was quietly laid before most of us were born. This is a very important book for anyone who has an open mind and has never been acquainted with the nature of power. It is also a must for anyone who truly loves freedom, is not offended by the concept of God, and who hasn't been emotionally imprisoned by propaganda emanating from the doctrinaire left or doctrinaire right.

Very solid stuff, although it's very dry and reads like a commentary. It's always hard for me to pinpoint why some writers are pure pleasure to read, why the style of particular authors draws me to their work, and why the work of others, like Stassen and Gushee, feel more like work. Here, I think the work is worth it, but I wish it was more compelling. The discussions of the Beatitudes in general are particularly interesting, with some useful insights. For instance, regarding the third Beatitude ["Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth," Mt 5:5, NRSV], they cite another author who "says it would be better to translate the word 'tamed' rather than 'meek,' in the sense that their wills have been tamed by God’s will" (40). And on the sixth Beatitude ["Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." Mt. 5:8, NRSV] "So the sixth Beatitude means, in a nutshell, blessed are those who give their whole self over to God, who is the only one worthy of the heart’s devotion." 45A worthwhile commentary on the Beatitudes, the main point is that the Christian's life ought to be completely congruent with Jesus' teachings, in particular, the Sermon on the Mount:"Christian churches across the confessional and theological spectrum, and Christian ethics as an academic discipline that serves the churches, are often guilty of evading Jesus, the cornerstone and center of the Christian faith. Specifically, the teachings and practices of Jesus – especially the largest block of his teachings, the Sermon on the Mount . . . . Jesus taught that the test of our discipleship is whether we act on his teachings, whether we “put into practice” his words. This is what it means to “buil[d our] house on rock (Mt 7:24)." 11I also like the definition of a Christian, as the authors describe it:"A Christian is (or should be) defined as one who humbles himself or herself and chooses to enter into discipleship, to follow Jesus’ path, to build his or her life upon his teachings and his practices even at great cost, to pass those teachings and practices on to others, and thus to enjoy the unspeakable privilege of participating in the advance of God’s reign. Jesus inaugurates the long-promised kingdom and thus offers holistic deliverance to the sick, the poor, the guilty and the rejected; incarnates and demands justice and righteousness; practices and teaches the way of peacemaking; and both experiences and imparts joy. Meanwhile, in his ministry and then through his living Spirit, Jesus offers the very presence of God." 30

This book is very well organized and comprehensive in scope. The point of view is from the evangelical tradition of the church, and the ways it used the Bible and the Sermon on the Mount might have been more plausible with a recognition of the critical historical understanding of the New Testament, but it was written with some openness and deep conviction.

In Kingdom Ethics, Glen Stassen (Fuller Seminary) and David Gushee (McAfee School of Theology) provide a Christian ethic rooted in the idea of the Kingdom of God as defined by Jesus' teaching in the Sermon on the Mount. But this is not a typical treatment of either.Perhaps the most helpful aspect of their Kingdom perspective is the section on the "Transforming Initiatives of the Sermon on the Mount." The authors present the commonly held views of The Sermon on the Mount, but then move to give new meaning to the Sermon and its application through a new look at the construction of each teaching section. The heart of their argument is that Jesus's teaching is a tripartite entity, dealing with the problem, the vicious circle caused by the problem, and the transforming Kingdom initiative which places both the problem and those involved in it, in a new light. An example would be:Traditional Righteousness: Matthew 5:38 -- "You have heard that it was said, `An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'"Vicious Cycle: Matthew 5:39 -- "But I say to you, do not retaliate vengefully by evil means." (This is the vicious cycle of violence, retaliation, and more violence.)Transforming Initiative: Matthew 5:40-42 -- "But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if any one wants to sue you and take your coat give your cloak as well; and if any one forces you to go one mile, go the second mile. Give to one who begs from you, and do not refuse one who would borrow from you."The authors contend that the entire Sermon on the Mount features this pattern of Jesus presenting the traditional view, the vicious cycle that results, and the alternative way of the Kingdom. Rather than the Sermon being an ideal, but unattainable vision or a spiritualized ethic, the Sermon becomes a practical, yet radically different way for the followers of Jesus to live out Kingdom values. This approach allows a depth of discipleship that previously held views (idealized or spiritualized) of The Sermon deny. One does not have to be perfect to be a follower of Jesus. Following Jesus also can take place in a very real, and gritty world. The individual disciple can apply Jesus teaching in practical, workable ways that will contribute to transforming relationships with people and with God.But this ethic of transformation based on The Sermon does not apply just to interpersonal relationships. Stassen and Gushee find application in the thorny issues of war, peacemaking, capital punishment, abortion, euthanasia, sexuality, gender roles, and biotechnology. Walking, not just a middle way but a transformative way, Kingdom Ethics presents a fresh look at how Christians can apply the teaching of Jesus in ways that are different from either a biblical legalism or a political liberalism. This transformative way often arrives at its application by means of a very different route than previous options. This fresh look at both the Kingdom and its values avoids the hardline approaches of both liberals and fundamentalists, and offers room for dialogue, appreciation, conversation, and peacemaking between the various hard-fought positions. The entire ethic becomes itself a type of peacemaking instrument, grounded in conviction, but recognizing that God's justice and love must both find expression in God's Kingdom as it is lived out. This approach deepens the Christian disciple's relationship to God in several ways. It is an approach which takes seriously the Biblical account, but which also brings the accumulated insights and tools of robust scholarly research to the task of interpretation. The authors accord Scripture a prime place, but interpret the texts in light of the life, teaching, and insights of the Living Word, Jesus Christ. This focus on the Lordship of Christ as the interpretive hermeneutic of Scripture grounds the follower of Christ in the real-life example of Jesus. If you're interested in ethics in light of Jesus' life, this is a book you must have. At almost 500 pages, it's not quick reading (I know because I read it), but will serve as a great ethics resource in any Christian leader's library.

Stassen and Gushee offer a great introductory text to biblical ethics. Using the Sermon on the Mount as a model, they derive a great foundation for which to practice ethics. I found the model on page 59 especially helpful and find myself often returning to it. They help the reader identify criteria to frame ethical thought. They discuss several contemporary issues in light of the Sermon and other biblical contexts then give a fair assessment of both sides and their conclusion. They use Scripture as a primary source and dialogue with other theologians and ethicists on each issue.

Book arrived quickly and in perfect condition as expected. Highlights include and insightful interpretive framework for the Sermon on the Mount and modern moral issues such as just ware fare and environmental ethics.

Sherry Jones tells of her and others life experiences as a paramedic, trauma nurse and correctional nurse. These are real stories that I as an RN can relate to. She kept my attention thru the entire book.

Superb prose, elegant vocabulary used well in building her rousing account of her life.A life of learning, giving, absorbing.

This book started out as a good read, mostly about patients but became more like a psyc lesson. My interest as a Nurse is more for the types of patients and care.

It was very interesting to read. As a medic it rings in what exactly we do and feel.

Great book! Well written and very insightful for us future flight nurses

Great read

I have several family members who work in the medical field, so I've spent my life hearing stories like these. Stories of medical personnel thriving on adrenaline while saving people's lives. This book is chock full of stories of Paramedics, Emergency Room nurses, corrections officers and others who help save lives every day. Some of the stories will make you laugh, some will make you cry, and you'll experience every emotion in between. My only problem with this book is that it's difficult to just pick up and read for an extended period of time. Because of the emotion involved it was much better for me in small bursts. But that's what makes this book amazing. It's what makes you have so much more respect for first responders and medics. Because now you've seen a tiny sliver of their lives and you're amazed that they can continue on, day after day.I truly recommend this book, as it will give you so much insight to the other side of every hospital visit and ambulance call.I received this book through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

There are people who put their lives on the line for complete strangers and the general public every day who are often overlooked as being a critical part of our communities. These nurses, EMTs, paramedics, etc., also known as "first responders", are held to such high standards and placed under intense scrutiny. Unfortunately, as a 'regular citizen', we don't get to see the multiple facets that come with a career such as these. This book gives you a firsthand look at every in and out of the careers whether it's good, bad, sad, or a complete give-in of continuing in this field of work. It's easy to say that we could step into their shoes and do their job but being in such critical positions, the events that unfold affect a person professionally, as well as personally. Any field of work that relates to the care of our loved ones is something we shouldn't take lightly. Confessions of a Trauma Junkie: My Life as a Nurse Paramedic is a book that we can all benefit from. We will stop taking people in these jobs for granted and learn to appreciate that they are humans, with real emotion, too. Some of the stories made me laugh while others took the very beat of my heart and caused tears to stream down my cheeks. I gained a whole new respect for this career group!I received this book through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

This book contains over 200 pictures of prints from the 1960s. There's paisley, flower power and much more. Many qualify as works of art. It's great for 60s freaks and anyone who likes bright, cheery pictures.

This book is part of the information that I need to put together for a 60's runway show that I am going to do later this summer. The information is helpful. The book is as described and was delivered in fine condition.
