Review

“…[T]hese books are good stuff, the writing as well as the art.... There is something in this story for every reader: mystery, adventure, humor, bad jokes and a real sense of menace.... This is absolutely the kind of book that I would hand to someone who has expressed an interest in comics.” - R.M. Rhodes, Forces of Geek

Maurice Tillieux's graphic novel is, most essentially, a lot of fun. Though reminiscent of Tintin in appearance, the Gil Jordan character (protagonist) is more acerbic, less of a boy scout than Tintin. Gil has amusing sidekicks also, but the best aspects of Tillieux's work are the evocative locales and the well depicted action sequences. The drawing style is slightly more cartoonish than with Tintin, but the degree of realism seems right for the story, sort of like Herge mildly influenced by Carl Barks. The dialogue is smooth and at least moderately clever. Though bad things happen (like murders), the stories never go anywhere near the harshness of contemporary comics, which often employ gruesome renderings in what I think is a misguided, even sophomoric, attempt at "comic maturity".The color is good if straightforward, strongly conveying the ambience of the story. Unlike with modern comics, there are only mild variations in panel size and shape; i.e., the art is servant to the narration, rather than vice versa: the action is easy to follow, even when physically complicated. The two stories included in this volume are from the late fifties, and there is inevitably a certain sense of nostalgia here, even if you've never seen Gil Jordan before. If you're past a certain age and have been reading comics long enough, "Murder by High Tide" will remind you of why you liked the form in the first place. Here's hoping the publisher gives us more.

Tillieux's Gil Jordan is a shining example of bandé dessinée at its absolute best. With art that is both fanciful and moody (an amazing balance of tonal qualities, when you think about it) and writing that is humorous without undermining the excitement and mystery of the stories contained herein, it's no wonder the Gil Jordan strip is so highly regarded among fans of Francophone comics. Tillieux's art seems to straddle a line between the cartoony "bigfoot" style of the Marcinelle school and the clean but realistic schematic style of the Ligne Claire school, and the combination is pure magic. Tillieux's Gil Jordan inhabits a world both dirtier and darker than that of Hergé's Tintin, but fans of the latter will certainly find plenty to appreciate in this volume. Heartily recommended to both fans of Franco-Belgian comics and to readers curious as to the full potential of the expressive cartoon stylings we no longer see in mainstream American comics.

In Europe, Maurice Tillieux is one of the most acclaimed authors of the BD (bande dessinée, comics in Belgian and French), a representative of the best Belgian-French comics tradition.Gil Jourdan is probably his most famous character and a true masterpiece of European comics. Tillieux's rendition of Paris' littered and shadowy streets, dusty offices, abandoned houses and fast car chases is just superb. The stories selected for this (hopefully just the first) volume are among the best of the Gil Jourdan saga. While I already own all the Gil Jourdan stories in French I bought this English edition for comparison. Fantagraphic did an excellent job: both the translation and the paper are excellent and I can't stop reading them over and over again with my 12-year-old kid. This volume fills a huge gap in knowledge of European comics and is a "must have" for any lover of good comics and graphic novels.

If this is the typical quality of French comics throughout the 1950s and 60s, we here in the states have some real catching up to do! The artwork is incredible - detailed, confident, sometimes epic in sweep - yet at the same time all done in a bigfoot style. I've always loved Herge (who doesn't), but this volume gives me the impression his work for Tintin was only the tip of an incredible iceberg. What more to say? The writing is tremendous, and while I don't speak French, I am assuming (because of the natural flow and beauty of the writing) that it is an excellent translation. What a story! Please believe me - if you love comics or comics art, this will knock you out.I want more now!

I got a BIG kick out of this '50s-era BD detective thriller (actually two stories, MURDER AT HIGH TIDE and CATCH AS CATCH CAN) and I'd like to thank all the other reviewers who recommended it! However Gil Jordan is kind of a strange mix. The artwork is effective, but it's the "Bigfoot" style associated with Lucky Luke,Spirou, and the the Smurfs. This is consistent with some of the characterization - "Crackerjack," Jordan's oafish assistant, is very broadly drawn as is Inspector Crouton, a Dupont/Dupond-style police detective who doesn't seem to have anything better to do than hang around the tough, cool, wise-cracking private eye. It's the main character and his environment who seem slightly out of tune with the style - although the moonlit roofs of Paris, the rainy streets of London, the shipyard of wrecks outside Le Havre etc are effectively drawn. The first tale is a neat mystery, but the 2nd has a couple of contrivances that seem, well, more in keeping with Spirou than Tintin! Also, both stories end with about a page of exposition in which someone explains the plot, which although not badly handled is kind of a weak windup. It's a fun pair of stories, however, and I heartily recommend them!

This comic strip was a real surprise for me not only because I loved it but because I never heard of it. There was some sadness that I didn't have access to it while growing up. Fantagraphics did a wonderful job to make it available to the English speaking public. I can't wait for the next album and I hope that they publish the entire series.

Great product ! We need more French/Belgian comics translated into English. This is a good addition for all fans of European comics

Great artwork, engaging stories (2 of them, although the title shows only one ). Great chase sequence through the sewer system in the second one!)

Frankly I was disappointed in this book! I expected a nice coffee table type book for the price ($50.00 dollars.....used) not this small thing!' My friends had just returned from the area and their amateur photos were as good as or better than those in the book!

This book manages to capture the extraordinary beauty of what is probably the most beautiful place on earth. The photographs are stunning (most of them are used on the postcards you'll find at the resorts!)and the accompanying narrative is informative, if brief. Although a little out of date in terms of the resorts covered and demographics supplied, I doubt you'll find a more impressive literary souvenir for your stay in the islands.

Review

"Lindy West's memoir is a witty and cathartic take on toxic misogyny and fat shaming. She comes to accept her body just as Internet trolls congregate en masse to try to rip this new confidence from her, but she's rearing to fight back...In Shrill, West is our fat, ferocious, and funny avenging angel."―NPR, Best Books of 2016"It made me hurt, both from laughing and crying. Required reading if you are a feminist. Recommended reading if you aren't."―Jenny Lawson, #1 bestselling author of Let's Pretend This Never Happened and Furiously Happy"Lindy West is an essential (and hilarious) voice for women. Her talent and bravery have made the Internet a place I actually want to be. Thank you, Lindy."―Lena Dunham, #1 bestselling author of Not That Kind of Girl"Hey reader! I thought I'd read enough in this lifetime about people's childhoods and feelings and such and I'd never want to do it again. But Lindy West is such a totally entertaining and original writer she kind of blew that thought out of my head halfway into the first chapter. I dare you to feel differently."―Ira Glass, This American Life "It's literally the new Bible."―Caitlin Moran, bestselling author of How to Be a Woman"One of the most distinctive voices advancing feminist politics through humor...With patience, humor and a wildly generous attitude toward her audience [West] meets readers at their point of prejudice so that she may, with little visible effort, shepherd them toward a more humane point of view."―The New York Times Book Review"Lindy West is funny. That's the first thing you should know about her essay collection on feminism, fat acceptance, and Internet harassment....Lindy has faced so many intolerable and enraging situations as a fat woman who is outspoken in her writing and on social media, but she always frames her negative experiences with humor and perspective. With her clear-eyed insights into modern culture and her confidence in her own intelligence and personal worth, West appeals to the humanity of even the most parents' basement-dwelling, misogynistic and casually hateful of trolls."―Esquire, Best Books of 2016"There's a reason Lindy West is such a beloved writer: she gets to the heart of impossible issues with humor and grace. West will have you cringing, laughing and crying, all within one page. Shrill is a must-read for all women."―Jessica Valenti, author of Why Have Kids and Full Frontal Feminism"The surge of love and joy I felt while crylaughing through this book almost made my cold dead heart explode. Lindy is so smart and so funny that it almost hurts my little jealous-ass feelings. She is my most favorite writer ever."―Samantha Irby, author of Meaty"Ask West one question, and the feminist writer and film critic's answer feels like wandering into an extraordinarily engaging women's studies class taught by your favorite comedian. West pings back and forth between astute commentary about the role of women in society to clever asides on the idiocy of trolls to riotous observations about life on the Internet."―Cosmopolitan

If Shrill isn’t already on your summer reading list, you may need to shift your priorities. I mean, the book has been out for a week, so, seriously, get on it.When I attended Lindy West’s first reading on her book tour for Shrill last week, she mentioned that she wanted “think pieces” about her work because with those, a person learns what works but also what they can fix.So, I thought about it and decided I’d try that approach with my little review that, admittedly, probably only two people will read (Hi Mom! Hi random person who thought this was something else!). So, here goes.In the first sections, the book is hilariously funny and I immediately worried because I wasn’t sure how West could sustain that level of funny. Well, she didn’t. Darn her, she took it at exactly the right moment down a more serious path. It was a perfect shift so she can’t fix that. But then she kept it a balance of serious and funny for several chapters and I thought, hmmm, is she going to lose the tension here? And whamo, just like that, salty drops of liquid burst from my eye sockets and yet again, she’d achieved a perfect transition and I was left sniffling as I dried the pages of her book. Can’t fix that either.I am pleased to tell you, however, that I did find one problem. On page 177, second half of paragraph three, she writes “Hari wrote for the show;…” Well, I’ll have you know that by page 177, I’d forgotten who the hell Hari was. So there.Yeah, that’s it. Truth is, this book is excellent. I would like every woman I care about to read it because I think it will be a salve for her soul. And I would like every other person to also read it because I am certain they will learn something meaningful. I would particularly like the men in my life to read it because I believe it will help you better understand the importance of language and how hurtful words can be, even when that is not the intent.West takes us on her journey in dealing with issues like body image, social responsibility in comedy, internet trolls, grief and love, in a manner that even if we haven’t had these same experiences, we feel included. Her writing is so fluid and accessible that she brings the universals of the human condition to the surface throughout.I was particularly moved by sections that evoked emotions around shame that I’ve long tried to suppress and yet was grateful when she followed up with lighter passages using her well honed comedic timing to save you from giving up or crumbling from the visceral depictions she includes.Perhaps the most important element, however, was that she left me with the key message that what we do in life matters. What Lindy West has done in her life matters tremendously because she has helped to shift our collective thinking on so many issues – fat shaming, rape culture and abortion, to name a few – and the world (at least my world) is a better place for her actions. Through documenting this work in her memoir, West reminds us that we can all do our part, even if in the tiniest of ways, to make the world better – safer – for one another. If you don’t already, you should also follow her work in GQ and The Guardian. You should also head over to tumblr and start reading the remarkable essays on the blog West started in 2014 called I Believe You | It’s Not Your Fault. (You might even find one by yours truly there.) Also do yourself a favor and listen to her episode of This American Life. I truly believe she is one of the most important voices of our time. So, again, add Shrill to your reading list and put it at the top. It is a quick, entertaining read, but also one that may either validate emotions you too may have tried to suppress or at least help you to see new perspectives on how things could be better for all of us.If nothing else, you’ll laugh. A lot.

If you are a woman, read this book. If you've ever been harassed online, read this book. If you're a man, read this book. If you've ever been annoyed at the fat person next to you on a plane, read this book. If you're any other gender or undecided or anything else I don't even know is a thing, read this book. If you've ever been fat, read this book. If the word 'fat' causes you an immediate emotional reaction, read this book. If you hate the word 'feminism,' read this book. If you marched as a feminist, read this book. If you've ever cat-called someone, read this book. If you've ever desperately dated, read this book. If you've ever felt bad about yourself, read this book. If you've ever known love but made mistakes with it, read this book. If you've ever been on a diet, read this book. If you've ever been mean to someone because of how they look (including yourself), read this book. If you've ever used social media, read this book. If you've ever felt uncomfortable in your skin or in a room or walking down the street or in a conversation because no one is getting it, read this book. If you got this far, definitely read this book. I cannot say enough about how much is in here, and how I plan on having both my kids read it when they're old enough. Lindy West sees things, then talks about them. All of them. We should listen closely. I stupidly put off reading it because of the title, thinking it'd be a rough, long, hard read. But I laughed SO DAMN MUCH. And loved. And learned. My eyes opened so much. I want to hug the author and say, "thank you." Read. This. Book.

You should read this book. Why? Because Elizabeth Gilbert's and Lindy West's books both speak truth from the heart....especially for women.I could riff here on Al Gore's book about climate change, which is called "An Inconvenient Truth" - Lindy's book could be called "An Uncomfortable Truth" because she takes on the last "acceptable" prejudice. People who wouldn't dream of being biased about gays, blacks, or other religions are still incredibly biased about fat people...especially women. So this is not only a funny and brave book, but an important book. Any woman who has felt even a fleeting few minutes of "body shame" should read it. Any person who is reading this and thinking, "I'm not prejudiced about anyone," should read it. Any woman who has had an abortion, or who has judged another for making that choice, should read this. Frankly, if you are human and you eat, pray or love, read this book.

I loved this so much. I crap out on books about 40 pages in about 90% of the time. If there's clunky writing, or it tries to be funny and is not, or the message is stale or preachy. This is none of these things. It's laugh out loud funny in parts with clever twists of phrase that make the hairs on my neck stand up in delight, I too of the comedy nerd brigade...I know funny. Like a sommelier of snark, this is high prose. There's touching parts and real depth and sadness and a whole range of emotions and things maybe some readers haven't thought about but they totally should if they're human. I heard her on This American Life read a bit from the book with a bit from Hello, I'm Fat and I laughed so hard I had to look her up. I don't partake in online media or network blather because I find it to be too big a pond with a lot of garbage in it, if I did, I'm sure I would have heard of her before. But this is better. A memoir by a young person who you'd absolutely want as a friend or maybe a therapist. Big world issues in here and calling people on the carpet for acting blindly, my favorite, Dan Savage's wake up call. I've never been able to wrap my brain around the appeal of that guy written or oral, for someone who wants to be accepted for exactly who he is he is kinda smug.We need voices like Lindy West in the world and the World of Women and Internet and Body Image and Humor. A thinking woman's book. I loved it and finished it in 2 days. I haven't done that since I was going to be tested on it the next day.

“A thrilling punk rock epic that is a tour of all we know and can't admit to. Pico is a poet of canny instincts, his lyric is somehow so casual and so so serious at the same time. He is determined to blow your mind apart, and . . . you should let him.” - Alexander Chee“Mix of hey that’s poetry (uncanny resistance) with hey that’s a text and smashing goals & fulfilling them along the way & saying my parents fulfilled them. Doing it differently being alive & an artist. I love this work. Unpredictable & sweet & strong to continue.” - Eileen Myles“The self-conscious labor of these poems explores a culture of asides, stutters, stammers, and media glitches. It's no wonder Tommy Pico manages to name and claim identity while also reminding us of his (and our!) limitlessness. Nature Poem is a book about our true nature.” - Jericho Brown“A poet who will not hesitate calling out winter as a death threat from nature, Tommy Pico hears the wild frequencies in the mountains and rivers of cities. The marriage of extraordinary sharp writing with the most astute commentary on almost every possible thing a human will feel, think, do, dance like, or smell like. Then, suddenly, he asks, “What if I really do feel connected to the land?” I read this book in one sitting. Then I read it in one sitting again the next day. The staying power of this poem I will blatantly say is without doubt!” - CAConrad“Pico centers his second book-length poem on the trap of conforming to identity stereotypes as he ponders his reluctance to write about nature as a Native American . . . In making the subliminal overt, Pico reclaims power by calling out microaggressions and drawing attention to himself in the face of oppression.” - Publishers Weekly, Starred Review“[Nature Poem] finds Pico incorporating or indirectly referencing his surroundings in freewheeling, intimate verse, while turning a humorous lens on life as a queer man.” - OUT Magazine“Humor lays the groundwork for a hard truth and, for poet Tommy Pico, that hard truth is about living as an indigenous person in occupied America. . . . Pico’s poetry builds a contemporary Native American persona, one that occupies multiple spaces simultaneously: New York City, the internet, pop music, and Grindr. It’s an identity that’s determined to be heard by the culture at large.” - The Organist/KCRW“Instead of following the conventions of the pastoral tradition, in which nature is revered, Pico adopts a tragicomic view. On the one hand, the land of his native people can be described with great reverence, desert nights that “chill and sparkle and swoon with metal/ lighting up the dark universe.” On the other, that same landscape carries and extends legacies of racism and genocide that Pico is determined not to forget.” - The San Francisco Chronicle“Pico has pulled me out of a poetry slump. His poems make me want to live with more poetry, to read, write and revel in poetry as a form that does not have to be a container.” - Brooklyn Magazine“Few people capture New York, queerness, and the artful use of hashtags in a poem quite like Tommy Pico.” - NYLON

Wow. Blown away by this. Love his use of language.I wrote elsewhere that I wanted to give out quotes from this, but every time I opened the book to find something I just started reading all over again. For me, the language was just the right mix of accessible and challenging. The subject matter too! It's a fine balance with poetry and there's a lot I don't have patience for, on both ends. But when it hits - woah.I have his first book on order and am looking forward to his next later this spring.

I teach university courses in Native American and Environmental Literature and just finished teaching Nature Poem for the first time in fall 2018. On the one hand, it's a challenging text to teach because there is SO much packed into every section of this extended rumination on Tommy Pico's ambivalent relationship with "nature": He wrestles with and rejects reductive white stereotypes of Indigenous peoples' complex connections with ancestral earth places, yet reflects lovingly on the beauty of his own Kumeyaay Nation homelands. On the other hand, my students loved this book so much that I didn't really need to "teach" it at all: Nature Poem speaks for itself, voicing Pico's smart, snarky, self-conscious, love-and-loathing relationship with identity boxes, in language that is fresh, lively, and ultra-contemporary (including text-talk abbreviations). Pico's wordplay, his colonialist critiques, and his willingness to go there make this book grow better with each reading. Buy it and treat yourself.

Tommy Pico is an excellent and evocative poet. He manages to make his blunt statements and bold topics sound elegant without sugar-coating or lightening the weight of his words. Nature Poem is a truly beautiful work of art, and I've leant it to three of my friends who all loved it. On top of that, it's a quick read although it is not quick to leave the mind.

A genius and a legend in the making and we’re all here to witness it.

Honestly, I haven't read all of it yet, but so far it is great. Product description was exactly right.I love this author's work. He's really different and he has wonderful insights. A joy to find something meaningful and fun at the same time.

Brilliant. I've read it in bits and pieces. Re-read. Shared my copy. Just bought another. Ready to read it again. I'm entranced.

not bad!

Wonderful!

From the Inside Flap

"A seminal political economy analysis of why banking varies so much across countries, with such profound consequences for economic development and social welfare. Not just fascinating and original, but also right."--James Robinson, author ofWhy Nations Fail"A monumental intellectual and scholarly achievement that will shape thinking on finance and politics for decades to come. A book for the ages, whose insights are delivered in a lively, punchy, and nontechnical narrative."--Ross Levine, University of California, Berkeley"A major contribution to our understanding of banking, showing why nations need banks, why banks need the state, and how the quality of banking depends on how the 'Game of Bank Bargains' is played between politicians, bankers, and a penumbra of key protagonists."--Charles Goodhart, London School of Economics and Political Science"What explains the dramatic variation across countries in the extent, structure, regulation, and fragility of banking? A masterful achievement and a must-read for banking scholars, analysts, and regulators."--Allan Meltzer, author ofA History of the Federal Reserve"Fragile by Design bristles with insights about how conflicting private interests, intermediated through political institutions, have sometimes produced banking and social insurance arrangements that make financial crises much more likely than they should be."--Thomas Sargent, Nobel Laureate in Economics"Why do America's banks go bust so often? Fragile by Design draws back the veil that hides the murky world where politics and big money meet, and exposes the surprising truth--that the banks were built to fail. Fragile by Design takes a fresh approach to looking at banking systems and frequency of crisis through a game theoretic lens. It is a fresh viewpoint on thinking about banking systems and their stability and the relationship between banking and the state. The authors focus on the UK, the US and Canada as well as Mexico and Brazil. They discuss the history of the state and banking in each of these countries to give the reader a framework with which to think about the game theory embedded in the risks of setting up banks, distribution of banks and allocation of credit, and the distribution of returns to the various stakeholders.Fragile by Design is split into 4 sections. The first is titled No Banks without States and No States without Banks. It lays the foundation of why modern societies need banks and how banking systems first evolved to support fiscal spending. The describe in straightforward terms how there is a mutual dependence between the state and the financial system and especially in the mercantilist economic era that ability to fund wars was a matter of survival for the sovereign. The need of wealthy elites to be confident that their wealth would not be expropriated through the financial system created a bargain between the state and banking principals about how to allocate a country's savings between the constituents (often unrepresented for that matter). The authors give the history of the Bank of England and how it was created to support the funding of wars with France. The authors also detail how the need for greater inclusiveness for the population within the political sphere led to a slow moving change of the Bank of England's mandate from supporting the state and being the sole allocator of credit to being the discounter of bank bills and thus the effective banker's bank. The authors detail how the changing political economy and bank bargain between the banks, state and Bank of England led to a more fragile banking system than in Scotland in which banks competed on a more equal plane with one another. The authors in the first section familiarize the reader with the language of bank bargaining as well as provide an illuminating history of the coevolution of banking and the state. The authors then move on to the main section of the book The cost of Banker-Populist Alliances. Through their framework the authors give the reader a sense of how the US banking system has been more fragile through its history due to particular bargains (based on early agrarian ideology) that led to a fragmented banking system up until the 90s. The authors discuss US history and the battles of the early US politicians over the relevance of a central bank. The authors discuss how banking in the US was not federally regulated and was decided by State legislatures which as a function of trying to keep consistent credit allocation harvested unit banks (banks of one branch). The authors detail how the banking system poorly allocated credit through the system or effectively forced credit to be local and had no economies of scale. This bargain led to a higher frequency of banking panics through time. The federal reserve system was an attempt to help by instituting regional central banks which coordinated but the authors note that they did not always agree like today and that the system back then still had no cross state banks. The authors discuss how deposit insurance was another bank bargain that created potentially more fragility as it changed the incentives of bank operators. The authors also Canada and how it has had no banking crises in its history. The authors discuss its different history in which British rule coupled with French population dominance led to stronger central government that changed the bank bargaining game and led to a more oligopolistic banking system that was prevented from extracting rents by rolling bank charters which could be led to expiry if banks behaved poorly. The third section is titled Authoritarianism, Democratic Transitions and the Game of Bank Bargains. To a certain extent this section gives the best understanding of how changing institutional arrangement changes the way banks function. The authors begin the book with the idea that banks don't exist in lawlessness as the risk of appropriation is too great. The authors in the third section go into case examples of fairly lawless states and how their internal changes have led to banking reform. The authors focus on Mexico and Brazil. They start with Mexico and give its history and describe how the first stable banks were formed during "Pax Porfiriana" when there was a stable coalition of politicians and financiers that was able to form. Prior to this the state was run by warlords who would appropriate banks capital at will and as such were effectively non-existent. The increase of credit in the economy was measured during this period to show how banking intensity increased. The reader is given a taste of how banking credit was typically allocated to all the business ventures of the bank principals rather than broadly through society. The authors then discuss how the PRI took over in the 20th century and ruled up until the banking crisis in the early 90s. They discussed the cronyism in the privatization of the banks in which the bidders funded their purchases with loans from the banks being purchased. The authors discuss how the banks ended up becoming reformed through foreign acquisition in which lending became merit based and now most of the Mexican banking system is dominated by foreign banks. The authors also discuss Brazil and its history. They discuss the role of the slave trade on the distribution of wealth and how such a distribution led to the bargain between the elites and the Portuguese Royalty. The authors discuss how the coalition of rulers and elites used inflation to extract gains out of the more poor laboring society and how such a phenomenon led to persistent high inflation that finally let do political change.Fragile By Design provides a new way of looking at the financial crisis as well as a new way of looking at the structure of economies as a consequence of the Game of Bank Bargains. The authors recognize that giving their narrative doesn't give an algorithm for discussing probabilities of bank failures and discuss some econometric results that give substance to their suspicions. They also highlight that their framework allows a new perspective on thinking about bank crisis as a consequence of variable interdependence rather than as a statistical exercise. There is much that is controversial and I'm sure many would immediately dismiss the authors views that the housing crisis was a function of a political bargain with the banks about lax capital requirements to fund risky loans to ameliorate rising inequality, but their arguments are coherent and there is much evidence to support their perspectives. The authors also briefly discuss China, Japan, Germany, Chile as potential counterexamples and handle them well. This is a fresh perspective on financial crisis as propogated through the banking channel and their framework is a valuable one to consider when analyzing the relationship between banking and the state.

The book was much broader, deeper and denser than I had expected. "Broader" in the scope of nations it studies -- substantial space is given to the development of the banking sector in the UK, USA, Canada, Mexico and Brazil, with further brief discussions on several more nations. I had been expecting a more-US-centric book. "Deeper" in that every one of the major chapters goes back at least two centuries, and of course more in the case of England, it goes back 4. Here again, I was expecting a purely contemporary account. And "denser" to acknowledge the staggering number of references cited in support of the authors' argument. It's a very serious book, that expands in a very scholarly manner on the insight sketched out by, among others, Rajan in Fault Lines, that the configuration of banking sectors and the terms and conditions of credit extension and enforcement are not just the natural result of free market interactions but have been structured very closely by political programs. In short, every government has the banking system that its political class wants it to have. If you have an oligarchy, the banking system will be chock-full of insider loans. If you have an autocracy, the banking system will be negligible because no one will trust the government to refrain from expropriating it. If you have a reasonably representative government, the banking system will be directed toward extending credit to the median voter's economic level. When parties have to compete for votes, they inevitably use the banking sector as a means of courting marginal voters or rewarding loyal constituencies -- pushing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into subprime mortgages in the Clinton era, or partnering regulators and banks in the GWB era.In many cases, going back to the creation of the Bank of England in 1694, the banking system has been devised to facilitate the war-fighting aims of the sovereign. The same is shown to be true of the Union in the Civil War. And of course, once the political elite tasks the banking system to serve as its aide or partner, they inevitably winds up having to support the partner in times of trouble, a symbiotic dynamic that is often demonstrated throughout the book. Meanwhile, in another recurring theme, populist agendas often determine the conditions on which lending is done outside of wartime. The book contains brilliant, concise narratives of how a populist-agrarian coalition shaped the US banking sector throughout the 19th and early 20th century -- briefly summarized, farmers wanted local banks that had no alternative but to be responsive to them in lean years, but, as the nation grew more urban, that political coalition waned, and branch banking and banking consolidation followed. But, as the authors show, a different coalition, originating with affordable housing activists and urban Democratic Party operatives empowered by the Community Reinvestment Act, arose in its place to extract their own tolls or rents from banks seeking to merge, and eventually from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as well (because only government-backed entities could absorb the credit risk flooding the system as a result). And thus the policies that led to the financial crisis of 2008 were put in place by the political process. The authors' phrase for this symbiotic dynamic between the banking sector and the government of a nation is "the Game of Bank Bargains": politicians want banks to make credit available freely to the fisc and to targeted constituencies, who vary from era to era and nation to nation, and banking executives can indeed be persuaded to play along, as long as they get what they want for themselves, which has generally entailed some measure of shifting the resulting credit risk back to the state. They explore its various permutations thoroughly, in more eras and more cultures than I had anticipated. The contrast they draw between the recurrent instability of America's "unit banking" system with Canada's relatively safer and sounder banking system was particularly eye-opening. And the chapter on Mexico, written I suspect by Haber, who has published a lot on Mexican banking, was absolutely dazzling.Overall, this was a stunningly good book and I hope it will be widely read as I think it really puts not just the financial crisis but the entire history of banking in an enlightening perspective.

Most materials covering this topic for the broader public explain the 2007-2009 financial crisis as the culmination of greed gone amok. Calomiris and Haber would not disagree that individuals are motivated by self interest. Well, of course they are! However, rather than stopping there they proceed to describe how the representatives of political systems too often fail their constituents. The authors do this via a thorough review of the banking histories of the United States and other countries. Their organizing principle for this review is the Game of Bank Bargains. Participants in this game are depositors, debtors, bankers--especially their minority shareholders, and government. The authors show how the arrangements made by these participants determine the degree of banking fragility. If a simplistic explanation of banking fragility is what you want, don't bother, you surely will be disappointed by this book. If instead you are looking for a deeper understanding of the causes of bank crises then I very much recommend the book. Such readers will not need a PhD in economics to grasp the details as the book manages to convey its points very effectively through illustration rather than equations or excessive banking jargon. To B-school academics, I recommend considering the book as an adjunct to your standard text for a financial institutions course. The authors comparative approach to banking goes far toward explaining how liquidity and solvency problems arise and how those can be prevented.

Amazon.com Review

Can't get your characters to shut up? Is the bit player in Act II more compelling than your protagonist? Do your scenes drag on f-o-r-e-v-e-r? Whatever your problem, screenwriting guru Syd Field can help; he's written four previous books on screenwriting, teaches worldwide, and is "involved in the reading and writing of about a thousand screenplays a year." Screenplays bog down in vague and mysterious ways, says Field; identifying a screenwriting problem is half the battle. Fixing a screenplay that seems dazed and confused might seem like Mission: Impossible, but you've got to have courage under fire. By identifying symptoms in the writing, Field isolates about 20 different screenwriting problems, each related to plot, character, or structure (after all, what else is there?). His fixes generally involve getting to know your characters or story better, through the use of automatic writing, biographical sketches, and the like. For examples of spectacular screenwriting, he offers excerpts from the screenplays for Thelma and Louise, The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Apollo 13, and Silence of the Lambs. Field is a man of many mantras: "Writing is rewriting," "Film is behavior," "Drama is conflict," "Action is character." But his advice is so useful that you'll forgive him his facile phrasemaking. And you'll thank him for persuading you that, yes, "a problem is an opportunity, a challenge that will allow you to ultimately improve your craft." --Jane Steinberg

An excellent guide, but you should read his book Screenplay – The Foundations of Screenwriting first in order to better understand his terminology. I liked the repetition for emphasis; it was good for a novice such as me. The writing style is easy and quite readable. The only place I had trouble was in following his screenplay examples since I hadn’t seen most of the films. But, if I took it upon myself to see them, I’m sure Field’s remarks would make a lot of sense. Also, the book was last copyrighted in 1998. While the basics are surely there, a little updating might have been in order.

So great! Fully appreciate the clear guidance through the maze of hidden screenwriting problems. A master's guide to getting out of being stuck!

I bought this book to catch up on ways to motivate myself when writing my scripts. I run into problems with scenes that don't fit and the book easily explains what to do. My screenwriting moto is that if it doesn't fit take it out. Anyone who has to do rewrites for agents, hollywood prod. companies or for themselves, should pick up this book. EXCELLENT....

This is helping me so much to get past the hiccups in my screenwriting.

This is one of the best books I've read on the art of diagnosing and editing screenplay problems. I got much more out of this in one sitting than going through years of weekly writers critique groups. He gives very practical, formulaic rules for analyzing structure, character and plot problems, and his illustrations drive the points home. I highly recommend this book.

everything that i had hoped for

Bought it new and it arrived in great condition!

Item as described. Very good book.
