Review

“A memorable tale, one that will appeal to fans of Gary Paulsen, Jack London, and even Cormac McCarthy.” ―The Horn Book, Starred Review“Sedgwick lures his readers into deeper thinking while they savor this thrillingly told tale.” ―Publishers Weekly, Starred Review“A chilling, atmospheric story that will haunt readers with its descriptions of a desolate terrain and Sig's difficult decisions.” ―Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review“The bleak setting and ominous circumstances will draw immediate comparisons to a Jack London tale, but in a more accessible, spare style. Reluctant readers will be riveted by the suspense and the short chapters.” ―School Library Journal, Starred Review“A carefully crafted story effectively rigidified by taut plotting and the crystalline atmospherics of its isolated setting.” ―Booklist“An elegant, brilliantly executed tale. . . . This novel of only 167 pages is packed with more excitement and wisdom than many twice its length.” ―The Times (London)“A gripping thriller.” ―The Guardian

I bought this book after reading another Sedgwick book, and I found that Revolver, though not quite as compelling as Midwinterblood, was still a fun, quick read that I enjoyed.

Revolver is part historical fiction (set in the frozen arctic in the early 1900's), part mystery (Did Sig's father steal gold from a prospector during the Alaska gold rush? If so, where is it?)and mostly a story of a young teen facing a life altering moral dilemma. Sig was raised by a stern but loving man who found ways to create a home and life for his family in unbearable conditions. His father taught him the world is a cruel place and sometimes requires cruel actions to survive. Sig was also raised by a mother and step-mother who were both very gentle, religious pacifists. When the story opens, to the family's dismay, their always careful and pragmatic father tried to cross the thawing lake, fell through the ice and died. Sig's sister and step-mother have gone to town for help. The contradictory parenting clashes when a sinister, violent man shows up at the family's arctic cabin the day after Sig's father died. Sig must deal with the angry visitor, Mr. Wolff, alone. Mr. Wolff says he will kill Sig if Sig does not turn over the gold stolen from him years before. After Sig is dead, he will wait for the sister and step-mother to return and give them the same ultimatum. Sig creates an opportunity to fetch his Dad's revolver and hide it on his person, but can he bring himself to kill Mr. Wolff? Revolver is very short and there is little action, but every page is tense with Sig's fear and Mr. Wolff's anger and the tension builds to a surprising and frightening climax.

Different

This is a very good book. It tells the story of a hard life with hard decisions from a boys point of view. I would recommend this book to any young teen that is looking for an exciting read.

Full of twists and turns and "hold your breath" moments, kids and adults will love this story. It elicted an actual applause at the end from the kids I read this to.

Exciting...keeps you enthralled!

Despite the frigid climate and desperate men infected with gold fever, there is also courage and love and family. Will that be enough, or will Sig need to use the revolver to survive?

This book is fun and cool to read and It was amazing I read it in 2 nights at the end he get the revolver and we'll your just going to need to read it to find out

Living the Secular Life: New Answers to Old Questions, by Phil Zuckerman

Review

Susan Jacoby, New York Times Book Review: “An insightful mixture of academic research on shifting American religious views, his own experience as a parent, and interviews with others facing moral crises without God… this book is a humane and sensible guide to and for the many kinds of Americans leading secular lives.” A Best Book of 2014, Publishers Weekly:  "Zuckerman is a sociologist who in this groundbreaking book writes clearly, offers unobtrusive statistical support, and provides a persuasive and comprehensive look at the growing contemporary phenomenon of people who choose to live without religion, but with ethics and meaning in their lives."David Brooks, The New York Times"As secularism becomes more prominent and self-confident, its spokesmen have more insistently argued that secularism should not be seen as an absence — as a lack of faith — but rather as a positive moral creed. Phil Zuckerman, a Pitzer College sociologist, makes this case as fluidly and pleasurably as anybody in his book, Living the Secular Life." Publishers Weekly:  "In this fascinating work, Zuckerman (Faith No More: Why People Reject Religion), professor of sociology and secular studies at Pitzer College, explores the moral and ethical foundations of secularism, addressing the question of whether you can live a good life without God or religion. Anecdotal evidence abounds; interviews with former religious adherents who have moved into secularism, both within and outside their religious communities, offer a compelling argument for the non-necessity of God in the pursuit of a moral life. " Booklist:  "With recent polls reporting 30 percent of Americans are nonreligious, while other studies find atheists the least-trusted people in the country, isn’t it high time to blow away the myths about the nonreligious? Answering affirmatively, the sociologist founder of the first secular-studies program at Pitzer College presents real secular people as peaceable, productive, and living happily….He also shows that secularism isn’t bipolar—believer or nonbeliever—but includes many with some supernatural beliefs but who aren’t religiously observant. And there’s not a proselytizer or zealot among this group—the point being that secular people are not all—indeed, hardly ever—Christopher Hitchens or Madalyn Murray O’Hair. May one more prejudice fall."  Library Journal:  “The author brilliantly weaves stories and reflections together with empirical sociological research to create a rich portrait of secular America….Highly recommended for all readers, both religious and nonreligious, seeking a more accurate understanding of this ever-growing segment of the American population.” Greg M. Epstein, humanist chaplain at Harvard University; author Good Without God “Phil Zuckerman is without a doubt the leading American sociologist of secularism. And with America secularizing more rapidly and profoundly now than in any previous era in our history, Zuckerman’s work has become essential reading for everyday people who want to understand religion—and the nonreligious—in this country. Living the Secular Life represents the next big chapter in a centuries-old story, so if you’ve ever taken an interest in Dawkins, Harris, Hitchens, et al., you certainly need to pick this book up and find out where things are headed.” Bart Campolo, author Things We Wish We Had Said “Since coming out as a post-Christian minister, I’ve discovered all kinds of people sincerely pursuing goodness without the nurture, encouragement, and mutual support most church folks take for granted. These folks are hungry for fellowship and pastoral care, but even hungrier for a thoughtful, positive way to communicate their values and commitments to friends and family members instinctively distrustful of anyone who doesn’t believe in God. For them—and for me—Phil Zuckerman is a genuine hero, and Living the Secular Life is a wonderful gift. Here at last is a clear, concise, and compassionate guided tour of the world’s fastest-growing way of life. Zuckerman isn’t trying to prove everyone else wrong. On the contrary, he’s helping the secular community better understand and comport itself, and helping the rest of humanity understand that we’re on their side too.” Peter Boghossian, professor of philosophy, Portland State University; author of A Manual for Creating Atheists “For secular people seeking deeper insight into their own worldview, or religious people seeking to better understand the rise of irreligion in society today, this book is indispensable. An engaging, powerful read.”

This was a fairly quick read. I've read Phil's other two books and thought they brought up some points that True Believers should consider, though I have doubts that they would really change the mind of any evangelical.I enjoyed the book, and I'm certainly glad that Zuckerman wrote it. I'm glad he cited the anecdotes of unbelievers being harassed and discriminated against, especially those secularists who have the misfortune of living in the Bible Belt. Christians are told by Jesus to "love your enemies," but all too many of them see unbelievers as spawn of the devil, to be hated and told we will all go to hell. I think all of us secularists are aware of the low opinion the Christian majority in America have of us, but it's still disheartening to me to read that they would never even consider voting for an atheist or avowed unbeliever for any public office. After all, there's not supposed to be a "religious test" to hold public office in our country. And I'm glad he brought up the point about the "under God" clause in the Pledge of Allegiance, because many Americans blindly believe it was always that way, but it was simply added in 1954.There's a lot of anecdotes in this book. It wasn't written as an academic exercise, or a philosophical treatise, so don't expect it to be, nor should you attack it because it isn't. We need books like this from Zuckerman, if only, as he describes it, to give "backbone" to the secularists who are a growing number in America, so I think he realizes that he's largely "preaching to the choir." I'm not crazy about that choice of words, because some brainwashed believers actually think that secularism is some kind of religion, because it's characteristic of atheists, agnostics, freethinkers and humanists, as well as those who simply give no thought to going to church or reading the Bible. In other words, it's a large umbrella. The only criticism I have of this book is somewhat minor, but it still detracts one star from the 5-star rating I would have liked to give it. I expected a lot of anecdotes in the book, including his own personal anecdotes, but I would have liked to see a bit less of talk about himself and his friends.Anyone who reads widely of non-fiction will note that many authors of such works seem to dwell a bit overmuch on themselves and their life experiences. I would have preferred a bit less of talk about himself and maybe a little more about the hardships of being a freethinker in this country that prides itself on being "free."I would encourage True Believers to read this book, too, but even if they do, they may view it entirely through their own ideological lenses. It would be helpful if they reflected on the meanness and narrow-mindedness of many Christians toward their unchurched neighbors. And, of course, any bona-fide secularist should read the book. You might get some ideas from it that would promote some social interaction with other secularists. We are a growing number, and it's time we all came out from the shadows. Some Christians love to promote the notion that they are being hushed or punished or discriminated against. I guess they think being a Christian should make you automatically a victim or a martyr. But the shoe is definitely on the other foot, in America, and that's what this book points out clearly.

In contrast to some of atheistic literature, this book concentrates what non-believers are or can be, instead of what they're not. Some of the topics:Morality - Morality is developed from socialization, culture, intelligence and experience. Religion may or may not be included.Societies - Explores the correlation that secular societies tend to be better places to liveTrying times - Examines the myth "There are no atheists in foxholes" and provides several example of how secularism helps people deal with crisesDeath - You didn't exist 100 years ago and won't exist 100 years from now -- so live NOW!Definitions"Atheism" - Describes what is missing"Agnostic" - Either too wishy-washy or too academic to be useful"Secular humanist" - Celebrates the positives about life"Aweist" - Even more!

What a fantastic book. Zuckerman doesn't try to convert anybody but demonstrates through statistics and anecdotes that being secular can not only be full of meaning and wonder, but in some cases it can leave you better prepared for what life throws at you. This book is extremely well written, moves quickly, and is full of heart.I not only recommend it for us secular folk. Our religious friends and neighbors who are interested in understanding the now 25% (and growing!) of Americans who are not religious will come away with less fear of us. Who knows, they may even find some things to think about.

A wonderful piece of writing by a wonderful Secularist. This is a book that should be read by all those living in the US. It has great information on how secular societies are leading the world in almost all aspects. It also shows how many people live wonderful lives without any religion whatsoever and that is something of great value. This book is easy to read and very straight forward. Pick it up! You won't be disappointed.

An excellent book to explain being non-religious to the religious who can't understand how the secular can have morals and an ethical way of living. For me, it helped me better identify who I am and how to express my views.

Excellent and quick read. I'd highly encourage people who ARE religious to read this book as I think it does an excellent job of dispelling the many unfortunate myths and assumptions religious people make (or are brainwashed to think) about non-believers.

This story is an interesting twist on receiving a punishment. But what could she expect when she tried to outwit six alphas? And they definitely will make her learn from her mistakes. And well chapter 15 is beyond insane. Can someone draw up how that even works? Beyond hot and steamy.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

From the Inside Flap

David Snowdon, one of the world’s leading experts on Alzheimer’s disease, embarked on a revolutionary scientific study that would forever change the way we view aging—and ultimately living. Dubbed the “Nun Study” because it involves a unique population of 678 Catholic sisters, this remarkable long-term research project has made headlines worldwide with its provocative discoveries.Yet Aging with Grace is more than a groundbreaking health and science book. It is the inspiring human story of these remarkable women—ranging in age from 74 to 106—whose dedication to serving others may help all of us live longer and healthier lives.Totally accessible, with fascinating portraits of the nuns and the scientists who study them, Aging with Grace also offers a wealth of practical findings:• Why building linguistic ability in childhood may protect against Alzheimer’s• Which ordinary foods

In my younger years this book (Aging with Grace: What the Nun study teaches us about leading longer, healthier and more meaningful live by David Snowdon, Ph.D.) would have never been read by me. However, sliding into old age has a way of changing the way we look at life and death. We become more aware of our own mortality. This study (the “Nun Study.”) was started in 1986 involving 678 Catholic sisters. The nun’s ages ranged from 75 to 106 year old. It focused on scientific research into Alzheimer’s and aging. In my opinion, this research project is most likely more relevant for women because only nuns were studied. I wonder if they conducted a study of a group of monks or priests what the results would be?The results of this study revealed information that is still being evaluated today. It discovered a relationship between “early high linguistic ability in early life seems to protect against Alzheimer’s.” The importance of preventing strokes and depression is also vital in combating Alzheimer’s.This book is organized into 12 interesting and informative chapters. They include the following: the road to good counsel hill, the last nun standing, gray matters, the great gift, a tale of two sisters, amazing brains, one with the words, family ties, the heart of the matter, our daily bread, up and grateful and the hundred-year marathon. There is also information about the Nun study and the school, Sisters of Notre Dame.If you are interested in learning about aging issues and the Nun Study this book is for you.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Haiku Moments: How to read, write and enjoy haiku).

Purchased this book because it was required for a gerontology graduate course, but the course hasn't even started yet & I've already read this book. I really, truly enjoyed it. Not so much technical language that someone not in the fields discussed couldn't understand/keep up. The more technical parts, such as brain anatomy, are explained in a non-condescending way so the reader can comprehend the full story while also taking away new latent knowledge.

This is a wonderful overview of the Nun Study, its process and results. It offers insights into Alzheimer’s and other dementias as well as hope for the general process of aging. If offers key elements beyond science that seem to make for successful aging. Very readable!

AWESOME BOOK!!! Dr. Snowdon managed to take a super scientific study and make it super exciting, understandable and gave it a personal side. I gave this book as gifts to my mother, my aunt, my friend and I forget who else. I have also recommended it to many people facing Alzheimer's or, better, with relatives who have it. This book was so helpful and yet WAY more interesting than most journal articles and understandable for anyone and everyone!

My review and enthusiasm is recorded as the title. Transfer it here. I highly recommend this book to provide information and combat ageism.

Ever since my father's diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, I've worried about the little things I forget. Never mind that I've always been a little absentminded, I fretted about whether I received the dreaded APOE-4 gene in the genetic package he bequeathed me.This book gave me hope - lots of it!It shows clearly that the symptoms of Alzheimer's are not merely an immutable result of your genetic heritage but also of how you've lived your life. Reading about the nun who, in spite of a brain riddled with tangles and plaques, like the Energizer Bunny, kept on going and going, gave me plenty to hope for.Caring, kindness, love, service - all are integral to the community of nuns. Theirs is a joyful story and a fascinating read. Don't miss it.Six Stars!Phyllis Staff, Ph.D.author, "How to Find Great Senior Housing"and"128 Ways to Prevent Alzheimer's and Other Dementias"

This book is so well written and readable. He weaves the story of his research project around the lives of particular nuns who illustrate the topic of that chapter. Lots of very good information too with recommendations on what you should be doing throughout your life and into your golden years to be able to live a long, productive live with most of your mental faculties.

Dr. Snowdon’s Research and study is the starting point to the journey of curing Alzheimer’s Disease. His commitment and compassion is seen throughout the book. I was very inspired by his work and grateful to the nuns who participated. A great read!!

I'm updating this review after using this book for 26 weeks:This journal does a good job of prompting you to write about things you might not have thought to discuss. Somewhat of a "fill in the blank" process, the journal has incomplete sentences that you fill in. There have been several, such as, "Baby, what I really want you to know about me is _______________" that I probably wouldn't have ever thought to include in my baby journal, and was glad to write about. Some other examples of this are:"My parents are acting ______ and it makes me feel ______""The baby can hear now. What he/she probably hears most is _____.""Baby, someone gave me this advice about you and I don't want to forget it: ______".However, there are only 9 pages for photos, and next to no room to record what's happening each week during my pregnancy, as the entire page each week is taken up by these fill-in-the-blank questions. Some of the prompts don't pertain to me (such as ones that talked a lot about morning sickness, which wasn't a major part of my pregnancy), and others made me VERY uncomfortable, such as these examples:"My boobs are (check what applies):_ A teenage boy's dream_ A bit in the way_ Totally painful and huge_ Lovely. Really lovely._ Other: ___________"Another that made both me and my husband squirm and wonder what the author was thinking:"Intimacy is ___________ and involves _______________________ (goes on for three lines)."Since most of the prompts in this book are slated toward the baby one day reading it (they say things like "Baby, what I really want you to know is ____"), I can't imagine why I'd want to tell my baby about intimacy with my husband and then describe it! Ick.I'm glad to explore my feelings about the pregnancy through the insightful prompts in the book, but I would not use it for a future pregnancy nor recommend it to others. I'm also using The Belly Book: A Nine-Month Journal for You and Your Growing Belly (Potter Style) right now, which allows for photos each week and again for ultrasounds, and also has lots of room to write, unfettered, most weeks. In addition, it does ask some questions about every 4-6 weeks, so there is some "fill-in-the-blank" but it's much more balanced that in From Pea to Pumpkin. After using both for 26 weeks, I like The Belly Book much better for these reasons and also because it is big enough to store mementos and has space each trimester for notes on prenatal visits. I'd highly recommend that book unless you feel you'd prefer the guidance of the fill-in-the-blanks each week and don't want room for photos.

I feel like the book is dated and I'm not crazy about the fill in the blanks it provides. Some of them are weird, asking about breasts or sensual desire, some ask about things I'm not experiencing, like negative body images, and then some are repetitive, yes, I still want my baby to find happiness in life. I feel like the fruits it provides for baby body comparison are way off from what my apps show. I enjoy filling out a weekly journal, but wish it didn't have the guidelines and was just blank. I'm still using it since I put a few weeks into it before I started not liking it but not my favorite.

I bought this book and filled it out for my daughter. I liked it so much, I bought another for my next pregnancy. It's cute that it allows for several keepsakes throughout my pregnancy (pictures, ultrasounds, announcements, ect).My only criticism is that is seems slightly targeted at first pregnancies. Other than that, I really enjoyed writing in in both last time and now. Right now, I just occasionally change some words in sentences to make them more applicable to my subsequent pregnancy. :)

This journal is so perfect for my pregnancy! Being a veggie loving vegan, it suits my personality - however even if you aren't that much in alignment, it's perfect for week by week tracking of your experiences, attaching photos, and sharing your journey through pregnancy! Love the format (I've looked through every page already, even though I'm only 6 weeks), has a ribbon marker for easily finding where you left off, beautiful design and will be fun to share with family and baby! Excellent decision and I'm even more excited to fill it in now, thank you!

I'm sorry but this book is really not good. Perhaps it's because I used The Belly Book (highly recommend!) with my first pregnancy so I had high expectations but honestly, the questions in this book are a bit strange and confusing. For example "Sleeping requires ___(fill in the blank)___ And sometimes ____(fill in the blank)___. Intimacy is ____(fill in the blank)____ and involved ____(fill in the blank)____" Huh?! Am I writing an adult novel?? Maybe it's me but there are a lot of questions that I've put "???" as my response, which isn't the best way to document this pregnancy. There's really no variety in format from week to week; there's a series of odd questions and that's it. What's also a bit odd, each page has questions which are meant to be read by your child (presumably you'd give them the book when they grow up) but then three questions above it, I'm being asked to provide details on my "romance status". Ummmmmm. Yes, every kid wants to read the details of their parents' sex-life. That makes perfect sense. I feel pretty bad that this child will get the creepy pregnancy journal while my first born will get the Bible of belly books. Hopefully this one's a boy.

We adore this book. There are a lot of options out there for this type of item, but we are really happy we chose this one. It has one page for each week with just enough questions to be thorough but not so many that you will feel overwhelmed. Some of the other books are so involved it just sucks the fun out of it. The illustrations are adorable. There is also room for photos, mementos, and stories as well. It's great! My only complaint is that it is really geared toward mommies only, and specifically, the mommy carrying the baby. My husband and I have been doing it together by labeling who is writing what. I wish it was just a tad bit more general so that significant others can participate more easily.
