This isn't quite the liberated fairy tale we feminists would like to see - a little too much on the cook/housekeeper role for Princess Cimorene. Nonetheless, she is smart, stubborn, and competent, qualities worth admiring in any gender. It's well-written and humorous, so much so that even my wargame-playing spouse, who picked it up when he was bored, ended up enjoying it immensely. The first book is by far the best. It's a shame the collection isn't more easily available; I bought my set used but in excellent condition. Strongly recommended for all young kids, and earns a place on my permanent bookshelf.
The stories in these four books will keep those pages turning for younger and older. The story centers on The Enchanted Forest, its young King (well, young in Books 1-2), a non-traditional Princess (Cimorene) of splendid competencies including making dragon-size portions of cherries jubilee, a large vividly realized cast of characters including fresh takes on older friends such as Morwen, the witch-with-seven-cats.Best of all, are the dragons, specially Kazul the King of Dragons, she whom Princess Cimorene serves. LOTS of dragons with distinct dragonalities with whom Cimorene has to deal or handle or get along. A Coming of Age tale, yes, but for many ages!I had thought about getting one book to see how I liked it but I'm glad I bought all four at once. The quartet interlocks effectively and it is considerably less expensive to get this set. A friend had gotten me enthused as she described Book 4 as her favorite, much loved book from her girlhood. She remembers herself as 8 or 9 at the time. Some children that young could read & enjoy the tales. Ten to twelve probably would be a better age if the reader is thinking about "The Enchanted Forest Chronicles" as a gift for an imaginative young person who liked---for example, "Brave," whose reading level is beyond "The Hobbit" and who is not quite ready for "The Lord of the Rings."Or as a gift for yourself!ANY ALERTS?: These books are addictive! This is, best started when the reader can enter this world and remain there until the last page of each book. Otherwise expect, "Just one page more, OK?"
I've loved these books since I was a kid and I love them now. Must-read for any fantasy lover. Somewhere between Lord of the Rings and Xanth in terms of tone, with a lot of plays on fairy-tale tropes and very compelling characters. Despite not being female I would still love to be half as cool as Cimorene. If you haven't read these yet, you are doing yourself a disservice and need to resolve the matter immediately!
Excellent book for ANY age. I bought it for the 9 year old daughter of a friend. I have it on my kindle and was reading it to her and her younger sisters (6 and 3) on Thanksgiving to give all the adults a chance to talk without being disturbed. She was spellbound, but we only got through a few chapters. For Christmas, I got this so she could finish reading it on her own. She was ecstatic! Simple, clean book, great for kids, but not boring for the adults who are reading it to them. The copy I got was used and slightly dog eared, but that just tells me it was loved, and the girl I gave it to didn't care. Thanks to Ms. Wrede for this amazing and timeless book.
I bought this box set because I absolutely loved this series as a kid growing up. This paperback set is so beautiful, and I love Patricia C. Wrede she is a fantastic writer! This book centers around a female heroine who is a princess, but not the typical princesses you usually read about. She loves "not being proper", learning fencing, magic, and decides she wants to shape her own destiny. So our princess (Cimorene) does the only reasonable thing someone can do when faced with a difficult decision, she volunteers to be a dragons princess! These books are full of adventure, magic, princesses, princes, a king, dragons, witches, humor, and great twists and turns along the way!
These are delightful books! Two things stand out to me when I reflect on this series:Both Cimorene and Mendanbar are really enjoyable protagonists--it's FUN to spend an afternoon with them, watching them solve problems and encounter new things and interact with each other (once you get to book 2, anyway). There's something to be said for a hero and heroine who are funny, practical, and... well, heroes. Antiheroes are interesting, but sometimes it's nice to spend time with someone you'd like to be friends with.In addition, there's a gentleness to the world, the stories, and the characters that's really refreshing. Once again, as rewarding as dark'n'gritty fiction can be, sometimes it's nice to visit a place where conflicts are understated, people work through their problems, nothing is entirely horrific, and happy endings can be found. This is that kind of place.I will say that I've never liked the last book quite as much as the first three (it always felt a bit phoned-in, to be honest, and the change to first-person is very jarring), but given that the first three are SO GOOD I found it worthwhile to buy the boxed set.
I read these books as a child and I was so ecstatic to read them again as an adult. I'm so glad I own them now. It is a FANTASTIC series and well worth adding to anyone's library. I always loved Cimorene's character as a child because she reminded me of myself a lot.
This is the most amazing spoof of every fairy tale I can think of, with some of the most endearing characters I've ever read about. There's a Princess who doesn't act like a Princess should, a dragon who is careful never to breathe fire at her, a knight who keeps trying to rescue her even though she doesn't want to be rescued, and a whole society of wizards with no scruples. And that's only in the first volume, there are three more.
