Confessions from a school librarian. My name is Miss Judy. I work in a small Catholic school library. This is my fourth year. Previously, I spent four years in a high school library. I knew what I was doing because I had been a high school English teacher for many years before that and knew how to talk to high school students.But little children and middle school kids? I never had my own personal children, so working with the little ones was really scary at first. And middle school? I had always heard about that age group. And it's all true!!When the principal (also new to the school) showed me the library, I thought: Warehouse. Dingy, dull, no personality, just dusty books on dusty shelves. There are two rooms: the main room housing most of the collection and the smaller, darker, dirtier room with biographies and reference books.The summer I was hired, I sponged the main room sky blue, leaving what resembles sketchy white clouds peering through the blue. I put up posters, brought in plants which struggled through the heat of the poorly working, dripping air-conditioner. I cleaned every single one of the children's picture books. I added bright rugs. It looked better!The next summer I painted the walls of the smaller room a pale pink, added flowery border, put in carpet, painted the cabinets a matching pink and added decorations suitable for children. I moved all the children's books into this room and the references into the main room. I set up a separate VHS tape and DVD library next to the children's books.Then began weeding and automation. After two and one half years, I will finish by May. As I cleaned, repaired, discarded, and properly processed books for automation, I probably discarded 15 boxes of books--worn out, dirty, ripped, yellowed pages, outdated. During all this time, classes continued to come to the library.What I am confessing is that I have struggled to teach meaningful lessons to these children. I have never been happy with anything I have done and feel inadequate. I searched everywhere looking for books and lesson plans, websites. I was not happy with anything I found. I used things from each source, but I wanted something that I could turn to again and again. As an English teacher, my mind never stopped at creating interesting and meaningful lessons, but library stuff? I can't seem to wrap my mind around Dewey and dictionaries and book care and check-out procedures and overdue books and so on.Until yesterday when "Library 101: A Handbook for the School Library Media Specialist" came in the mail. I have poured through this book in the last 24 hours. It is my dream come true!! I have highlighted and checked websites and started jotting ideas to use next year. This is exactly what I have been looking for. The book is organized and just chock full of tips and ideas and lists and other resources. I am agog with joy!There is no need for me to break down the organization of the book. The first reviewer did a thorough job of that. In fact, I bought the book based on that review. I am simply telling my personal story of a floundering librarian who wants to be good before I retire. "Library 101" will be my guide! I am really pumped!

This book is much more realistic than those published by the ALA. It is full of tips that new and old librarians will find both helpful and useful. Aside from the reports about television and radio production, the book's authors seem to have taken in account situations that most librarians will face. The radio/tv scenarios may occur in some schools, but I do not know of one in the entire State of Rhode Island, so I found the info of no use. It was wrong of the authors to write that every librarian will be faced with tv or radio production "sooner or later". Obviously they experienced that, but not all librarians will. Otherwise, this book has many ideas that are very helpful for those in the field. Some are of the type that make one think "why didn't I think of that?" If I were to recommend only one book for a librarian to read & maintain for reference, it would be this.

This book and its information is outdated in most of its content. Some useful nuggets here and there but not worth the price of purchase.Consider nothing on social media, maker space or the latest in technology which are in constant state of flux in the information services sector.

Hated to part with this book now that I am retired. I felt this is a very good reference book and would buy it again if I needed it.

Getting a little dated ,however, still a useful resource for new librarians.

Good resource! I used this book to help me pass my licensing exam. It has some excellent tips for the beginner librarian.

This book is well written and useful if you haven't had library experience.

Any time I find a book of Ilse Altherr's, I grab it. She's an almost lyrical writer when it comes to needlework. I own this book as well as 2 of her blackwork books and all are so thorough that if you give them the slightest bit of attention, you can catch on to truly beautiful stitches. Many people confuse pulled thread with drawn thread (including Amazon who will show you titles of both when you plug in either title) and Ms. Altherr explains that drawn thread is when you cut out horizontal threads and weave the ends back into the right-hand and left-hand sides of the stitch area. You then decorate that area which is always a parallelogram by manipulating the vertical threads or adding fibers, ribbons, beads or whatever.Pulled thread, on the other hand, is much more fluid and can be round and elongated. The most common type of pulled thread stitches that we stitchers are familiar with are eyelets. The author deftly illustrates how to pull areas of thread and fill them in in such a lovely variety of ways...it all looks more complicated than it is. (Of course, we love that!)I can't speak highly enough of this author. If you're interested in other works on pulled thread, consider these. In each tale, Buddha assumes a different shape to impart his message of peace, attentiveness, tolerance and respect. Lee (The Song of Mu Lan) effortlessly and subtly weaves Buddhist practices and principles into her evenly paced tales. Each story is a study in brevity and restraint yet, like Buddha, conveys enormous empathy. For instance, after a heron, in a deceptive ploy, consumes all the fish in a lake, a crab outwits him then makes his way back to the water, "weeping all the while for his lost friends." Lee draws the frame story in black-and-white, with Buddha in teaching posture and the animals listening attentively. The full-color illustrations for each Jataka combine the strength of woodcuts and the fluidity of Chinese silk painting, with their serene landscapes in soft colors and confident black lines; the full-spread illustration of a lion heading off a stampede of animals bound for danger is especially moving. Grade 2-5-A group of animals, sheltering in a cave from the fierce monsoon rains, hears a small statue of Buddha speak. The six stories he tells calm the beasts and teach them wisdom. Chosen from the hundreds of ancient Jataka tales, the selections are, like many of Aesop's fables, gems of moral philosophy. Lee's retellings not only encapsulate some of the teachings of Buddhism, but also suggest the centrality of Buddha in that religion. Each selection begins with a different incarnation of the Buddha: "I was then a willow tree..."; "I once was a monkey..."; "Long ago, I was born a golden antelope...." Bought this to read to my son before bed. My husband is not Buddhist and was skeptical as to what I was teaching our son (we are raising him to be open minded). Even my husband thought this book was great. It teaches life lessons and has good stories.

Beautiful book!

The illustrations with the stories kept my kids happy and brought about the thoughtful questions and inquisitiveness that I was hoping. It also helped me start the conversations of religion (we are Buddhists) and our cultural background. I enjoyed these stories myself.

Exactly as described and arrived as promised. A gift for the grandchildren.

A wonderful collection of Aesop like Buddhist stories. The stories are quite short and thus make perfect divisions of read a few stories each night. The pages contain wonderful imagery. The stories themselves employ a playful use of animals to teach dharma. Each story provides a wonderful opportunity to stop and discuss the meaning of the story.

...this book contains timeless of stories of universal values. The stories will be familiar to all, and they resonate with children. Sure, they could read another mass-market product promoting book, or they can read something of substance with lessons and an ethical/moral framework that is entertaining yet still not preachy.

I bought this to read at night with my 3 year old.After a few reads I've found him picking up the book himself to look at the pictures and ask me questions about the stories.It's short enough to read read all the way through, but we'll typically read just one or two of the stories at a time and talk about them.The pictures are well done and very helpful for a little one in keeping their attention and helping illustrate the action.Highlighy recommended and glad we got it!

I bought this book to read with my 8 yr old son at bedtime. The book is very well written with the language being both accessible and engaging for young children. My son also loved the illustrations which have a wonderful clarity and warmth. Each Jataka we read gave us a great opportunity to talk about kindness, fear, greed and the other myriad feelings we have every day. Best of all, after we finished the book my son went back and read it again himself. Which is a big deal for him since he usually goes for Captain Underpants before anything else.
